A new exhibit opened this week at the Springfield Museums honoring the New York City firefighters who died on 9/11.
After seeing photos of each of the 343 fallen firefighters printed in the New York Times, artist Dawn Siebel set out to paint all their portraits, each on a block of charred wood.
The project took six years to complete.
Siebel, a former Manhattan resident who now lives in Easthampton, Ma., said she was inspired by the selfless heroism of the firefighters.
"They weren't there in the buildings when the planes hit, they went in there to try and save people and did save thousands of people," said Siebel.
The wall of images, which is 21 feet long, is on display at the Wood Museum of Springfield History through July 10th.
Springfield Fire Commissioner Joe Conant visited the exhibit Thursday.
