Activists have petitioned to block a new law from taking effect this week in Massachusetts that would limit the time foreclosed property owners have to file a title challenge.
Grace Ross of the Massachusetts Alliance Against Predatory Lending said the activists are invoking a rarely, if ever used provision of the state constitution that allows voters to petition for a referendum on whether a recently passed law should be repealed.
" We're not 'sort of' in unchartered waters, we are way out there," said Ross. " I picture those medieval maps with the sea serpents out in the water."
The process began when 18 registered voters signed a petition that was filed with the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office. Now, the petitioners need to collect more than 43,000 signatures of registered voters to put a repeal question on the next state election ballot.
