Two Finalists Chosen For UMass President

WBUR

Two finalists have been announced in the search for the next president of the University of Massachusetts.

Martin Meehan, the chancellor of UMass Lowell and John Quelch, a Harvard Business School professor are the finalists to be the next leader of the five campus UMass system.

University spokesman Robert Connolly said the two were recommended by a search committee at a meeting Thursday in Boston.

" They felt that either Chancellor Meehan, or professor Quelch had the potential to be a transformative leader for the university for the next ten years," said Connolly.

The 22-member UMass Board of Trustees will interview the two finalists at a meeting Friday and possibly vote on a new president to succeed Robert Caret, who is departing in June.

Meehan, a former Massachusetts Congressman ,was considered for the president’s job four years ago but withdrew.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
