Springfield Chamber Of Commerce Weighs In On Catholic H.S. Site Selection

Catholic Communications, Diocese of Springfield

A large business group is calling for a new regional Catholic high school to be built in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The 400-member Springfield Chamber of Commerce in a statement Wednesday said the “best and only location” for the new school is the tornado-damaged campus of Cathedral High School on Surrey Road in Springfield.

The new school is the result of a proposed merger of Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic High School.

Springfield Bishop Mitchell Rozanski plans to announce a site by the end of this school year.

" We are moving along quickly on that," Rozanski said recently.

Chicopee Mayor Richard Kos has suggested building the new high school on the grounds of a former tire factory.  Church-owned land in West Springfield is also being considered.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
