Officials with MGM Resorts have outlined a construction schedule for the $800 million resort casino in downtown Springfield.
Speaking at a meeting of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission in Springfield Thursday, MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis said a groundbreaking will take place March 24th. In the next six months 19 buildings will be demolished and other work done to prepare the site for the construction of a parking garage, a hotel, and casino.
" This is where we go from promises made to promises kept, and executing the project," said Mathis.
Mathis said MGM is bidding the project work in segments to give more opportunities to local contractors. The casino is tentatively scheduled to open in September 2017.
