All the world’s a stage — and in just its second year, Pittsfield’s Shakespeare in the Park has found a new one. The company will present one of the playwright’s most famous works this summer for free after moving to a recently upgraded downtown attraction.The answer to Annie Considine’s question of “Wherefore art thou Romeo!?” is Pittsfield’s First Street Common. Despite Considine’s performance at the press conference announcing the move to a brand-new performance pavilion, artistic director Enrico Spada says she didn’t get the part.
“Because in Shakespeare’s text Juliet is actually not even 14 years old,” Spada said. “In our production she’ll be slightly older than that, but still a teenager. So there will be about a dozen teenagers from age 13 to 20, 21 and then seven professional actors.”
Auditions are being held February 20 and 22 at Pittsfield’s Lichtenstein Center. A 40-day campaign aims to raise $7,500 for 12 free performances from July 16 to August 2.
