Actor Alan Alda Talks About His Efforts To Teach Scientists How To Communicate Better

WAMC/Pat Bradley

Actor, director and author Alan Alda is best known for his many roles on stage and screen, but the man who played Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H is leaving his mark on science as well. The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University teaches scientists how to better communicate what they are doing.  Alda inspired the institute and is a visiting professor. Now, the center is expanding and has affiliated centers at Dartmouth University and the University of Vermont. Alda spoke with WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley as the program was initiated at the University of Vermont this week. He says while it helps scientists communicate with the public, it is equally important for the public to understand scientists.

Alda gave a public talk called "Helping The Public Get Beyond A Blind Date With Science" as part of the launch of UVM’s formal affiliation with The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.
