wikipedia commons

More than 500 American flags will line Park Square in downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts Saturday. They will remain there for Veterans Day and throughout November. In the first annual Park of Honor event, Park Square will be filled by rows of three by five-foot flags. Yellow ribbons bearing the names of local veterans will be tied to the flag poles. Mayor Dan Bianchi says it will be a visual reminder of the nation’s armed forces.

“I bought a flag in memory of my dad who passed away a few years ago and was a B-17 crewman over in Europe during WWII,” Bianchi said. “It’s a nice way to keep their memory alive.”

Each flag cost $30. Proceeds support a college scholarship fund for children or grandchildren of Berkshire veterans set up by the Kiwanis Club of Pittsfield. More than $10,000 has been raised so far.

An opening ceremony is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
