A proposed natural gas pipeline that would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania through New York to Dracut, Massachusetts is receiving opposition from all over the country. A group of college students are spending their summer in the area to assist in the opposition.Students from the college internship Climate Summer program bike across Massachusetts during their vacation staying in churches and community centers. Coming from places like Philadelphia and Long Island they visit communities where the pipeline may run through to drum up grassroots opposition. A member of the Western Massachusetts team, Georgette Sordellini just finished her second year at Salem College in her home state of North Carolina.
“Although this pipeline is not something that directly affects me it indirectly affects me because of the health impact it’s going to have,” Sordellini said while staying in Pittsfield. “So I found that this was going to be one of the most meaningful ways I could spend my summer.”
The pipeline requires federal approval. The projected construction start date is January 2017.
The Western Massachusetts Climate Summer team is holding a meeting at 7 o’clock tonight at the First Church Pittsfield.
