More than 100 people in Sandisfiled, Massachusetts, home to about 900, came out Thursday night to hear more about a proposed expansion of a natural gas pipeline in the region.
Roberta Myers is one about 15 members of Sandisfield Taxpayers Opposing the Pipeline, or STOP. She recalls town residents being evacuated following a construction accident in 1981 when the last expansion was done.
“A large boulder flew up in the air and impacted the working pipeline, ruptured it and gas spewed up,” Myers said. “There was not a fire. Had there been, there would have been a lot of devastation.”
Kinder Morgan’s roughly $80 million Connecticut Expansion Project would add 13 miles of pipeline loops to serve an increasing commercial demand in the region, according to the company’s website. Local and federal approval is needed before construction begins.
