Downtown Springfield Will Host "Worlds Largest Pancake Breakfast"

WAMC

Thousands of people are expected to partake Saturday in the event known as “The World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast.”

What began a generation ago as a contest between Springfield, Massachusetts and Battle Creek, Michigan, exists for no purpose now other than to promote community, according to Judy Matt, president of Spirit of Springfield, the organizer of the breakfast.

" Bring people together from all the communities in and around Springfield, just bring people together."

Breakfast is served at tables lined up end to end down the middle of Main Street. Hundreds of volunteers serve up the pancakes and syrup, fry bacon, and pour gallons of coffee and orange juice. Free tickets were distributed to tens of thousands of school children in Hampden County.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
