The Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education says he’s hopeful the state’s community colleges will see a funding increase in the next state budget.
The state’s community college system received a $20 million increase in state funding this year, and Governor Deval Patrick has a $13 million dollar increase in his proposed budget. Speaking with trustees at Holyoke Community College Tuesday, Commissioner Richard Freeland said there may some adjustments in the performance-based formula for dividing up the money to the state’s 15 community colleges.
"Campuses that do well with student success, campuses that lead in serving at-risk students, campuses that align well with workforce needs get additional dollars."
Freeland said the legislature may also demand public colleges continue a freeze on student fees.
