Mass. To Hold More Hearings On Electronic Tolls

State transportation officials are holding two more public hearings on plans to switch to an all-electronic tolling system on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Drivers would no longer be able to stop at toll booths and pay cash, under the proposal.

Tolls instead would be collected electronically through a driver's E-ZPass or by a new system that records license plate numbers and sends a bill to vehicle owners.

Officials are planning a public meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Worcester City Hall, followed by another public meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. at Springfield City Hall.

Transportation officials already held a meeting this past week in Boston to discuss environmental impacts of the project.

The state is also planning an all-electronic tolling system for the Tobin Bridge.
