Special Election Expected To Fill State Senate Vacancy

The resignation of long-time Massachusetts State Senator Michael Knapik  of  Westfield will further erode the already small Republican minority on Beacon Hill.

Knapik’s resignation will leave only three Republican senators in the 40-member body. A spokesman for the state Republican party was optimistic about the chances for the party holding the seat. But, Springfield based political consultant Tony Cignoli expects the Democrats will make a serious bid for the seat.

Knapik is resigning effect Friday to take a new post in the administration at Westfield State University. He’s in his 10th term in the senate.  A special election will probably be called to fill the vacancy.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
