Efforts Spread In Holyoke To Fight Obesity

WAMC

One of the poorest cities in Massachusetts is waging a new campaign against obesity.

An initiative called “5-2-1-0” which promotes healthy eating and exercise is being rolled out to the public schools, pre-schools, community organizations and health centers in the city of Holyoke. Mayor Alex Morse said this new campaign is part of the city’s commitment to “ Let’s Move!” the effort championed by First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity.

75 percent of adults in Holyoke are considered obese, compared with the national average which is 60 percent.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
