NRC Meetings On Community Advisory Boards Include One Near Indian Point

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding public meetings about best practices for community advisory boards associated with decommissioning nuclear power plants. One of the 11 meetings will take place near the Indian Point nuclear point plant in Westchester County, New York.

The Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act was signed into law in January. In part, it requires the NRC to provide a report to Congress identifying best practices for establishing and operating local community advisory boards. The NRC will hold a public meeting near Indian Point October 2, from 6-9 p.m. at the Town of Cortlandt’s community center. Indian point Unit 2 is slated to shut down in April 2020 and Unit 3, 2021. There is a Vermont Nuclear Decommissioning Citizens Advisory Panel for Vermont Yankee, which is closed, and a meeting in Brattleboro September 11 will seek input about lessons learned thus far. The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Massachusetts shut down May 31, and the NRC will hold a meeting near that plant September 10.
