Indian Point 3 Returns To Service After Planned Outage

WAMC, Allison Dunne

New York’s Indian Point Unit 3 nuclear power plant is back up and running after a refueling and maintenance outage.

On March 13, Buchanan-based Indian Point Unit 3 entered its scheduled shutdown, which included an inspection of bolts on the baffle structure, which surrounds the nuclear fuel inside the reactor. During the $100 million outage, 270 baffle bolts were replaced, or about one-third. This follows the replacement last year of roughly the same number in Unit 2. In both cases, the number of degraded bolts was higher than expected. This was the second-to-last refueling outage at Unit 3 before its permanent shutdown in 2021. Unit 2 will be shut down by 2020.
