New York Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney Thursday announced the Environmental Protection Agency will invest $12 million for the first phase of a project to supply clean drinking water to a certain locale in Dutchess County.
Hopewell Junction residents have been waiting some 13 years for a new water source, since learning in 2003 that Hopewell Precision had dumped chemical waste onto the ground at its facility in East Fishkill. EPA designated the place a Superfund site in 2005 and has been paying for air and water filters in the homes of affected residents. Congressman Maloney says the $12 million is for a three-year construction phase, which should begin next year. Maloney since 2012 has been pushing for funding a permanent solution to accessing clean water for Hopewell residents.
