EPA Adds Wappinger Creek To Superfund List

Julian Colton

The Environmental Protection Agency has added part of a creek in Dutchess County to the federal Superfund list.

The EPA Wednesday announced that a two-mile long tidal portion of Wappinger Creek that includes locations in the Village of Wappingers Falls and the Towns of Poughkeepsie and Wappinger has been added to the list of the country’s most hazardous waste sites. The EPA proposed in April that this portion of the creek, downstream from an industrial park, be added as the sediment is contaminated with mercury and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recommended including this site on the federal Superfund list.
