A Hudson Valley utility company plans to offer LED streetlights to municipalities.
Poughkeepsie-based Central Hudson will offer municipalities the option to lease high efficiency streetlights using LED technology beginning in July this year. Central Hudson President James Laurito says LED streetlights use about one-half the amount of electricity as conventional streetlights, last four to five times longer, and can save municipalities on energy costs while lowering overall emissions and protecting the environment. The Public Service Commission is expected to rule on final details of Central Hudson’s LED streetlight program before July. Laurito says municipalities throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley together could save more than $900,000 in energy costs each year if all 25,000 existing leased streetlights were replaced with LED streetlights.
