Second Annual Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Schenectady

Second Annual Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Schenectady
On Friday, July 4, 2025, at 10:30 A.M., the City of Schenectady will continue its new holiday tradition with the reading of the Declaration of Independence on the steps of Schenectady City Hall by leading city officials.
The reading is the brainchild of Schenectady City Councilwoman Carmel Patrick, who grew up near Boston and first heard the Declaration read there. She kicked off the tradition in Schenectady last year with city historian Chris Leonard.
Of this year's reading, Patrick stated, "Now that democracy in America is threatened again, it’s even more important that we gather together. We need to remember that the fight to protect us from tyranny is not over.”
"We had a fantastic turnout last year, more than double what we anticipated. We hope to see the event grow each year as we move forward," said Leonard.
The following city leaders are scheduled to read on July 4:
Mayor Gary McCarthy
Schenectady County Legislature Chair Gary Hughes
Councilwoman Doreen Ditoro
Councilwoman Carmel Patrick
Councilman Joseph Mancini
Police Chief Eric Clifford
Fire Chief George Burns
with Leonard providing an introduction on the importance of the document, and Sylvie Briber singing the National Anthem.
The half-hour event is free and open to the public. It is part of a larger day-long celebration of July 4th held throughout the city.
