Most American Jews don’t believe in a god, yet still consider themselves Jewish. Humanistic Judaism, a non-theistic alternative, removes the supernatural from holiday and lifecycle rituals. Paul Golin, of the Society for Humanistic Judaism, will talk about the implications of this approach for other secular people as well - the familial and cultural pull toward tradition and history, the benefits and pitfalls of ethnic and cultural identity that continue after secularization, and how rituals can enhance life.

Paul Golin is the executive director of the Society for Humanistic Judaism (www.SHJ.org), where he leads Jews for a Secular Democracy, defending the separation of religion and government. Paul has co-authored two books and his writing on secularism, intermarriage, disaffiliation, and inclusion has appeared in the Forward, Jewish Week, Huffington Post, and elsewhere.
