51% Show #1307

On this week’s 51%, we’ll hear from a leading expert about how the environment is impacting women’s health. And we’ll return to a different environment, in which a discussion about the confidence gap between men and women takes place. It’s part two of an interview with the best-selling authors of their book The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance---What Women Should Know.

Dr. Linda Birnbaum became director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in 2009, the first woman to lead NIEHS and the National Toxicology Program. NIEHS is an institute of the National Institutes of Health.  Birnbaum oversees a budget of more than $700 million and some 1,000 on-going research grants seeking to discover environmental influences on human health. Birnbaum notes that the World Health Organization estimates there are at least 13 million deaths every year that could be prevented by improving the environment. New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey recently hosted a forum at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York entitled “Silent Dangers: Environmental Impacts on Women’s Health.” The following is a portion of the presentation delivered by Dr. Linda Birnbaum.

We’ll return to Dr. Linda Birnbaum’s presentation “Silent Dangers: Environmental Impacts on Women’s Health” on the next 51%.

Now we head back to a discussion about confidence. Following the success of their best-selling book Womenomics, authors Katty Kay and Claire Shipman have written a book on women and confidence. Kay is the Washington, D.C. anchor BBC World News America. Shipman is correspondent for ABC News and Good Morning America. Their latest book is The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance---What Women Should Know. On the last show, we brought you part one of 51%’s Joe Donahue’s interview with Katty Kay and Claire Shipman. And now, here is part two.

That was part two of 51%’s Joe Donahue’s interview with Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, authors of The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance---What Women Should Know. We brought you part one on the last show, #1306.

And that confidently concludes our show for this week. Thanks to Katie Britton for production assistance.  Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett.
