51% Show #1306

On this week’s 51%, we’ll explore gaps -- the pay gap between men and women.  And the confidence gap, between men and women, as you’ll hear from two best-selling authors as they talk about their book The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance---What Women Should Know. Also on this week’s 51%, a gap in faith followed by faith in a gap.

Months after U.S. Senator from Maryland Barbara Mikulski and Connecticut Congresswoman RosaDeLauro introduced the Paycheck Fairness Act, DeLauro says new research shows that closing the gender

pay gap would improve women’s Social Security benefits as well as Social Security’s finances overall. She teamed up recently with officials from Social Security Works to release the research and highlight additional benefits to pay equity.  (:30)

Next, we turn to a confidence. 51%’s Joe Donahue speaks with the authors of The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance---What Women Should Know. It is part one of a two-part interview.

2014 has been a mile marker for women, especially when it comes to politics. While Western women have taken a step forward, headlines suggest women in many Islamic countries have taken two leaps back. 51%’s Dave Lucas has the following story.

Now we’ll here from two Islamic high school students as they address traditional Islamic values, through their poem.

And that concludes our show for this week. The gap won’t be too long until our next show, and there’s no gap if you’d like to hear this show again or visit the 51% archives online at wamc.org. And you can e-mail me at adunne@wamc.org. Thanks to Katie Britton for production assistance.  Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett.
