One day after being criticized by the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, the mayor of Hoosick Falls, New York is hitting back. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler was asked on a conference call about the agency’s approach to regulating PFAS chemicals, which have contaminated water supplies in places like the village in Rensselaer County.

“I saw a quote a yesterday from the mayor of Hoosick Falls criticizing the agency. I imagine the mayor is not aware of the work that we’ve done with the state in helping that city with their contamination,” Wheeler said.

Speaking with WAMC News Wednesday, Hoosick Falls Mayor Rob Allen called Wheeler’s statement “kind of an honor” and reiterated his call for the EPA to declare PFAS chemicals hazardous.

“I remain open and welcome to anyone, especially Administrator Wheeler, coming to Hoosick Falls and sitting down with us so that he can get more of a hands-on understanding of what has happened here, what EPA is and isn’t involved in.”
