A project to uncover and preserve previously unknown wall paintings by 19th century Hudson River School artist Thomas Cole will go forward with $460,000 in federal funding.
Officials at the Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill say small sections of a frieze, or decorative border, were found in two rooms at Cole's house in Greene County. They applied for $600,000 for restoration work.
Sen. Charles Schumer backed the request and says Friday that part of it it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Humanities. He said he'll continue to fight for an additional $150,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Cole lived from 1801 to 1848 and founded the Hudson River School, a movement that concentrated on landscapes detailing American nature and rural life.
