On Saturday and Sunday evening the Albany Symphony will be at The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall presenting a program featuring Pachelbel’s Canon in D, Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” featuring acclaimed soprano Talise Trevigne, Andre Myers “Studies in Hope: Frederick Douglass,” and Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony.

Myers’ piece was commissioned by The Albany Symphony for The Dogs of Desire and this weekend the piece will be performed by the Albany Symphony with the Albany High School Choir under the direction of Brendan Hoffman, sopranos Chelsea Fingal and Paule Aboite, and two student hip hop emcees from Albany High School.

We were joined by Albany Symphony Music Director and Conductor David Alan Miller and by “Studies in Hope: Frederick Douglass” composer, Andre Myers.

Modfest, Vassar College’s annual exploration of the arts of the 20th and 21st centuries, celebrates its 17th season with the theme, “In Motion.” Assorted arts events take place through February 10th and include a panel discussion and concert by Ensemble Mik Nawooj on Saturday, February 9. The 4 p.m. Panel Discussion: Method Sampling and a New Aesthetic will take place at Skinner Hall on the Vassar Campus, and the 8 p.m. concert will be performed at the Trolley Barn in downtown Poughkeepsie, New York.

Oakland based Ensemble Mik Nawooj is led by composer/pianist, JooWan Kim. EMN creates Meta Music by sampling principles of Hip-Hop and Classical music. The ensemble features MC/lyricists Do D.A.T. and Sandman along with a lyric soprano, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, drums and bass.

Composer and pianist JooWan Kim began his formal training in composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.M. in composition in 2003. He continued his education in composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, from which he received a M.M. in 2006. JooWan founded Ensemble Mik Nawooj in 2010.

BTG PLAYS! 2018-2019 Touring Show is "Showtime with Shakespeare: A Magic Tree House Adventure," based on "Magic Tree House: Stage Fright on a Summer Night" by Mary Pope Osborne, book and lyrics by Jenny Laird and Will Osborne, music and lyrics by Randy Courts and directed by Travis Daly.

The Badilas are a close-knit family of artists whose incredible talent and community spirit have made them a household name in Hudson. The Badila’s unique blend of Central and West African traditions and popular culture resonates at home, and reverberates on the world stage. Elombe and Pamela Badila united to create a family and legacy of education and performance that celebrates their heritage. Elombe passed away in 2012 and his family continues this mission.

Hudson Hall presents a series of Badila family events this weekend. 

We learn more from each of them but do want to make sure it’s clear that there are many other siblings and participants celebrating and performing in Hudson this weekend.

"Spirit of the River" will be performed at Hudson Hall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Milandou Badila (aka Young Paris) creates Afrobeat hip-hop music with an electronic injection on Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. His most recent album is “My Tribe.” Lady Moon and The Eclipse perform on Saturday at 7pm - their EP "Believe" is available now and they are working on their first LP.


  The hip-hop string-duo Black Violin is playing at The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall this Thursday at 7:30.

Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester and William "Wil B." Baptiste met at a performing arts high school in Florida where they were both viola players. In Black Violin Kev Marcus plays violin and Wil B. plays viola - both men are also music producers raised on hip-hop. Their music incorporates classical string sounds, innovates on those sounds, and mixes them with hip-hop music. They’ve toured with Wu-Tang Clan, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco, Tom Petty - and others.

    MK Asante was born in Zimbabwe to American parents: a mother who led the new nation’s dance company and a father who would soon become a revered pioneer in black studies. But things fell apart, and a decade later MK was in America, a teenager lost in a fog of drugs, sex, and violence on the streets of North Philadelphia.

Buck is a powerful memoir of how a precocious kid educated himself through the most unconventional teachers—outlaws and eccentrics, rappers and mystic strangers, ghetto philosophers and strippers, and, eventually, an alternative school that transformed his life with a single blank sheet of paper.

    In 2008, the musical In The Heights was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won Best New Musical, Choreography, Orchestrations, and Score. It was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and it introduced the world at large to the diverse and impressive talents of its writer, composer, lyricist, and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The writer, composer, actor worked with Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents on the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story - specifically swapping out English lyrics for Spanish in portions of songs sung by the Puerto Rican characters; he performed in the City Center Encores presentation of Merrily We Roll Along in 2012; and he co-wrote the music and lyrics for Bring it On: The Musical - which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best New Musical this past Broadway season.
