Congresswoman Stefanik

Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York’s 21st district was in the national spotlight during the impeachment hearings when she challenged Intelligence Committee Chair Democrat Adam Schiff. The conservative base has been enamored with her steadfast support of President Donald Trump and insistence that the hearings have not produced evidence of impeachable offenses. She’s discussed her interchanges with the Democratic committee chair extensively during national interviews. Stefanik spoke this morning with WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley about the witness testimony. She says she prepared for the hearings by attending and reviewing the depositions.

For the past few weeks, impeachment hearings have been held behind closed doors by three U.S. House committees. Among them is the House Intelligence Committee, including Republican Elise Stefanik of New York’s 21st district. She has been calling for open hearings yet voted against last week’s House resolution to begin the public phase of the inquiry into President Trump. Congresswoman Stefanik tells WAMC North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley she believes such a move would actually further secrecy.

Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is seeking her third two-year term representing the 21st district of northern New York.   During a visit to Plattsburgh this week she talked about the campaign saying while national analysts like the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rank the district as safely Republican, she continues to reach out to voters.
