MLB:

David Price pitched eight shutout innings for his fifth straight win, backed by three bases-loaded doubles in Boston's six-run fifth inning the Red Sox are the first team in baseball to reach 90 wins after beating the Cleveland Indians 7-0 yesterday to split their four-game series. Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland left yesterday’s game against Cleveland with a bruised left knee after sliding near a photo pit in pursuit of a foul popup. Moreland remained in, but left for pinch-runner Blake Swihart in the bottom of the first after reaching first base on a flyball left fielder Melky Cabrera lost in the sun.

Madison Bumgarner hit an RBI double for the only earned run off Mets ace Jacob deGrom and topped him on the mound, too, pitching the San Francisco Giants past New York 3-1. In his first appearance in New York since tossing a four-hit shutout in the 2016 NL wild-card game, Bumgarner allowed one run on five hits in eight innings. He struck out eight and walked none. DeGrom exited with a major league-best 1.71 ERA. He allowed two runs on four hits in six innings, striking out 10.

The New York Yankees were off and face the Baltimore Orioles tonight at 7 p.m.

NBA:

Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving has officially become a member of the Standing Rock Sioux. Irving and his older sister, Asia Irving, took part Thursday in a traditional Native American ceremony recognizing their tribal heritage and support for the tribe's long battle against the Dakota Access oil pipeline. They were honored with Lakota names during a ritual in a packed auditorium. Their late mother was a member of the tribe and lived on the reservation until her adoption at an early age.

NHL:

Center Jack Eichel has come to the realization he can't transform the Buffalo Sabres into contenders on emotion alone. After three frustrating campaigns, the face of the franchise tells The Associated Press he's focused on taking a steadier approach in the 21-year-old's bid to continue maturing into a team leader.

One of the top players in women's hockey history is joining the Toronto Maple Leafs' front office. Longtime Canadian national team star Hayley Wickenheiser is the NHL club's new assistant director of player development. Wickenheiser won four Olympic gold medals with Canada. She retired as a player in 2017 as the career leading scorer for the Canadian team.

NFL:

The Buffalo Bills have placed linebacker Keenan Robinson on the reserve/retired list. The move comes a month after the Bills signed the sixth-year player just before they opened training camp. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier characterized Robinson's decision as personal.

NCAAF:

Fifth-year senior Vincent Testaverde has been tabbed the starting quarterback for the University at Albany football team's season opener at Pittsburgh on Sept. 1. Coach Greg Gattuso announced the move. Testaverde is the son of longtime NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde.

Tennis:

Serena and Venus Williams have been drawn into a potential third-round matchup at the U.S. Open. It would be their earliest Grand Slam meeting in 20 years. If the sisters do play each other, the winner could face No. 1-ranked Simona Halep in the fourth round. This marks Serena's return to Flushing Meadows after missing the hard-court tournament in 2017. She gave birth to her daughter last September.

WNBA:

Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi each scored 27 points to help the Phoenix Mercury beat the Connecticut Sun 96-86 in the second round of the WNBA playoffs. The Mercury will face Seattle in the conference semifinals.

PGA:

Tiger Woods failed to carry any momentum he had from his last tournament into the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Neither did Sean O'Hair. That was only good news for O'Hair, who needs to play well at The Northern Trust to keep his season going.

Horse Racing:

Tomorrow marks the 149th running of the Travers stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Good Magic is the favorite to win with 2-1 morning-line odds.
