#SportsReport: WTA Returns To New Haven For Connecticut Open

Connecticut Open

WTA

The Connecticut Open is the final tuneup for the women before the U.S. Open in New York.

This year's tournament features five of the top 10 ranked players in the world: No. 1 Simona Halep, No. 5 Caroline Garcia, No. 6 Petra Kvitova, No. 8 Karolina Pliskova and No. 10 Julia Goerges.

That's the most top-10 players in the field since 2006, when six top-10 players were entered.

Opening night on Monday will feature a flag procession onto the court at the Connecticut Tennis Center led by Yale's bulldog mascot, Handsome Dan XVIII.

MLB

The Houston Astros have regained sole possession of first place in the AL West by avoiding a three-game sweep in Oakland.

Justin Verlander picked up his 200th career victory and the Astros banged out five home runs in a 9-4 drubbing of the second-place Athletics. Evan Gattis provided the tiebreaking, solo homer in the fourth, one inning after Yuli Gurriel slammed a three-run shot. Marwin Gonzalez, Alex Bregman and Martin Maldonado also went deep as the Astros won for just the second time in nine games.

Khris Davis homered twice and Matt Chapman also connected off Verlander, who yielded four runs over 5 1/3 innings. Davis has 36 home runs this season, two off the major league lead.

Houston's bullpen worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings as the ballclub moved one game ahead of the A's.

Checking out Sunday's other major league action:

Arizona still leads the NL West by a half-game over Colorado after A.J. Pollock's solo shot in the ninth inning gave the Diamondbacks a 4-3 victory at San Diego. David Peralta also homered and Daniel Descalso tied it with a solo shot in the eighth inning of the DBacks' fourth win in five games. Hunter Renfroe provided the Padres' scoring with a two-run homer and an RBI single.

The Rockies completed a four-game sweep in Atlanta as German (hur-MAHN') Marquez allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings of a 4-2 win against the Braves. DJ LeMahieu gave Colorado the lead with his third-inning homer, one day after providing the tiebreaking blast in the 10th inning of a 5-3 victory. Wade Davis gave up a one-out single but had three strikeouts in the ninth for his NL-leading 35th save.

The Mets were winners in the Little League Classic at Williamsport, Pa. as Amed Rosario had three hits and three RBIs in an 8-2 whipping of the Phillies. Jeff McNeil was 2-for-5 with a two-run single, and Jason Vargas allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings for his third win in 11 decisions. Nick Pivetta was reached for six runs over 3 2/3s as Philadelphia lost for the seventh time in 11 games to stay a half-game behind the NL East-leading Braves. The Mets take on the Giants Monday at 7:10 p.m.

The Dodgers' 12-1 dismantling of the Mariners keeps the Dodgers two games off the NL West lead and drops Seattle four games behind the AL West-leading Astros. The M's did little against Clayton Kershaw, who struck out seven and allowed one run and four hits over seven innings of his 150th career victory. Justin Turner went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and five RBIs, while Kike Hernandez added a solo shot and three ribbies.

The Pirates earned a split of their four-game set by topping the Cubs, 2-1 on Adam Frazier's homer in the bottom of the 10th. Kyle Schwarber opened the scoring with a second-inning homer for the NL Central leaders, but Pittsburgh forced extra innings on Gregory Polanco's RBI double in the sixth. The Cubs managed just one run in each game of the series, but the split leaves them 3 ½ games ahead of second-place Milwaukee.

The Brewers avoided a three-game sweep as Jhoulys Chacin worked six scoreless innings of a 2-1 victory at St. Louis. Chacin gave up four singles and no walks in helping Milwaukee move a half-game ahead of the Cardinals for the second NL wild-card berth. Mike Moustakas put the Brew Crew ahead to stay with a two-run double in the third.

Jose Urena gave up just two hits in his first career complete game as the Marlins crushed the Nationals, 12-1. Urena retired his last 16 batters in his first start since appealing his six-game suspension for throwing at Braves rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. last week. JT Riddle and J.T. Realmuto each homered and drove in three runs for Miami, which also received a career-high five hits from Starlin Castro.

Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer while the Reds erupted for seven runs in the third inning of an 11-4 assault on the Giants. Jose Peraza also hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati, which outscored San Francisco 18-5 in the last two games of the series. Billy Hamilton tripled twice and drove in three runs.

The Red Sox managed just two hits while the Rays homered twice in a 2-0 shutout win at Fenway Park. Jalen Beeks worked four innings against the team that traded him last month for Nathan Eovaldi Joey Wendle and C.J. Cron homered as the Rays cut Boston's lead in the AL East to 9 1/2 games over New York. Boston hosts the Indians Monday at 7:10 p.m.

J.A. Happ also beat his former team and Greg Bird balted a grand slam in a six-run first that sparked the Yankees' 10-2 rout of the Blue Jays. Happ struck out eight and limited Toronto to two runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The Yanks completed a three-game sweep, but they could be spending time without shortstop Didi Gregorius after he hurt his left heel in a collision at first base. The Yankees have the night off as they head to Miami to face off against the Marlins Tuesday at 7:10 p.m.

Melky Cabrera crushed the Indians' ninth grand slam and Mike Clevinger pitched six innings of Cleveland's AL-leading 13th shutout, an 8-0 thumping of the Orioles. Greg Allen added a run-scoring single in the second that extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Yandy Diaz had two RBIs for the Indians, who still lead the AL Central by 12 games over Minnesota.

Eddie Rosario hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and the Twins scored all of their runs with longballs in a 5-4 decision over the Tigers. Max Kepler and Jake Cave had two-run homers as the Twins won for the fifth time in six games. Minnesota led 4-1 after the fourth-inning blasts by Kepler and Cave.

Rougned Odor smacked a go-ahead, three-run homer with rain falling in the seventh inning of the Rangers' 4-2 victory over the Angels. Odor has a major league-leading 23 RBIs this month. Shohei Ohtani doubled and scored the run that put the Angels up 2-1 in the fourth inning.

The White Sox received seven shutout innings from their bullpen while turning a 6-0 deficit into a 7-6 triumph at Kansas City. Omar Narvaez homered and drove in the go-ahead run with a fifth-inning single Avisail Garcia and Tim Anderson also homered in Chicago's fourth win in five games.

In other baseball news:

Cubs’ right-hander Yu Darvish lasted just one inning in his rehab start with Class A South Bend, casting doubt on his availability for the rest of the year. Darvish shook his arm as he left the field after striking out Great Lakes' Romer Cuadrado with a 95-mph fastball for the last out of the first on Sunday. When he warmed up for the second, he threw six pitches and winced on each one. The 32-year-old Darvish signed a six-year, $126 million contract with Chicago in February and made just eight starts with the Cubs, going 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA. He has been sidelined by triceps and elbow injuries

Indians outfielder Leonys Martin has been released from the Cleveland Clinic after being treated for a life-threatening infection. Martin became ill after a game on Aug. 8. Doctors determined he had a bacterial infection that entered his bloodstream and created toxins that damaged his internal organs. Doctors will continue to monitor his recovery.

The Twins have placed right-hander Ervin Santana on the 10-day disabled list and reinstated outfielder Robbie Grossman from the DL. The Twins also recalled right-hander Alan Busenitz from Triple-A Rochester.

Touted pitching prospect Michael Kopech will make his major league debut with the White Sox Tuesday at home against Minnesota. The 22-year-old is one of the top arms in Chicago's loaded minor league system. Kopech is 7-7 with a 3.70 ERA in 24 starts with Triple-A Charlotte this season, striking out 170 in 126 1/3 innings.

The Cubs will face the Pirates in next year's Little League Classic Aug. 18 at Bowman Field on Aug. 18, 2019. The Cubs and Pirates will attend Little League World Series games earlier in the day.

NFL

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed veteran cornerback Orlando Scandrick to a one-year contract that could be worth up to $1.5 million, filling an area of need after an offseason overhaul of their secondary.

The longtime Cowboys cornerback inked a two-year, $10 million deal with the Redskins in March but was released Tuesday.

He fills the roster spot in Kansas City that Robert Golden opened upon release Wednesday.

In other NFL news:

Bills quarterback AJ McCarron is getting a second opinion to determine the severity of an injury to his throwing shoulder. Coach Sean McDermott said he couldn't provide an update on McCarron because tests on his right shoulder were not "totally conclusive." Meanwhile, Bills veteran defensive tackle Kyle Williams is in jeopardy of missing the start of the regular season with a knee injury.

The Bengals have released safety George Iloka, clearing the way for rookie Jessie Bates III to move into a starting role. Iloka has been sharing time during preseason games with Bates, a second-round pick out of Wake Forest who was given a chance to win the job at the outset.

Two people with knowledge of the diagnosis say Cowboys right guard Zack Martin has no structural damage in his hyperextended left knee and should be ready for the opener. Martin was injured in the second quarter of the preseason opener.

LPGA

Sung Hyun Park has reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking in women's golf with her third LPGA Tour victory of the season and fifth of her career.

Park erased a two-shot deficit over the final four holes and birdied the first hole of a playoff with Lizette Salas to take the Indy Women in Tech Championship. Park closed with a 4-under 68 to match Salas at 23-under 265 at Brickyard Crosssing.

PGA

Bart Bryant made a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, in Endicott, New York for the second time in six years.

Bryant closed with a 7-under 65 to end up 16 under for the tournament, one shot better than second-round leader Michael Bradley. Bryant made six birdies in a nine-hole stretch from the third to the 11th. He also had six straight pars before the winning birdie putt on the par-4 18th.

Wyndham Championship:

Brandt Snedeker has won the Wyndham Championship for his ninth PGA Tour title, three days after opening with an 11-under 59.

Snedeker closed with a 65 for a three-stroke victory over C.Y. Pan and Webb Simpson. Snedeker secured the win with a birdie on 18 after Pan double-bogeyed the hole.

Snedeker finished at 21-under 259 for his first win since 2016 and his second at the tournament, but first at Sedgefield Country Club.

INDYCAR

Alexander Rossi was the winner at Pocono Raceway in race marred by a violent wreck that sent IndyCar rookie driver Robert Wickens to the hospital.

Rossi raced to his third victory of the season for Andretti Autosport and second straight. He also won on the streets of Long Beach in April and the Mid-Ohio road course three weeks ago.

Wickens is being treated for injuries to his lower extremities, right arm and spine following an accident six laps into the race. IndyCar said the Canadian sustained a pulmonary contusion and will undergo an MRI and probable surgery.
