Former Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays All-Star pitcher Roy Halladay died Tuesday when his private plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. He was 40.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said during a news conference that Halladay's ICON A5 went down around noon off the coast of Florida. The sheriff's office marine unit responded and discovered Halladay's body in shallow water near some mangroves.

No survivors were found, although police said they couldn't confirm if there were additional passengers on the plane or say where it was headed.

Halladay was 203-105 with a 3.38 ERA on 12 major league seasons before retiring in 2013. The eight-time All-Star tossed a perfect game for the Phillies in 2010, five months before throwing a no-hitter in his first postseason appearance. He won Cy Young awards with the 2003 Blue Jays and 2010 Phils.

The three-time 20-game winner led his league in both complete games and shutouts three straight seasons from 2008-10.

NBA-SCHEDULE

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to avoid their sixth loss in seven games by overcoming a great performance by Giannis Antetokounmpo. Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs seem to have righted themselves following a four-game losing streak.

Kevin Love scored a season-high 32 points and had 16 rebounds as the Cavs downed the visiting Bucks 124-119. Love appeared at full strength after he was briefly hospitalized following Sunday's loss to the Hawks.

LeBron James had 30 points and J.R. Smith found his shooting touch while scoring a season-best 20 points for the Cavaliers. James hit a pair of baskets and two free throws down the stretch to help Cleveland improve to 5-6.

Antetokounmpo finished with 40 points on 16 of 21 shooting and contributed nine rebounds and eight turnovers before fouling out with 18 seconds left.

In San Antonio, the Spurs set season highs with 15 3-pointers and 12 steals in a 120-107 rout of the Clippers. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points for the Spurs, who opened 6-for-9 from beyond the arc and finished 15-for-28.

Danny Green scored 24 points, Rudy Gay had 22 and Pau Gasol added 19 in San Antonio's third straight win.

Checking out Tuesday's other NBA action:

— Anthony Davis poured in 37 points on 14 of 18 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Pelicans knocked off the Pacers 117-112. DeMarcus Cousins had 32 points to help the Pelicans pick up their third straight win and improve to 6-5, the first time New Orleans has been over .500 since the end of the 2014-15 season.

— The 76ers have their first five-game winning streak since the 2011-12 campaign after Dario Saric scored a season-best 25 points in a 104-97 decision over Utah. J.J. Redick added 20 points and Ben Simmons finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

— Harrison Barnes scored 31 points and the Mavericks ended a six-game losing streak by downing the Wizards 113-99 in Washington. Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. had 22 points as Dallas beat the Wizards for the 14th time in their last 15 meetings.

— Tyreke Evans scored 21 points off the bench and Mike Conley provided all 20 of his points in the second half of the Grizzlies' 98-97 triumph at Portland. C.J. McCollum led the Trail Blazers with 36 points but missed a potential game-winning jumper in the closing seconds.

— DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points and Jonas Valanciunas had 21 and 10 rebounds as the Raptors topped the Bulls 119-114. Chicago's Bobby Portis had 21 points and 13 rebounds in his first action since serving an eight-game suspension for punching teammate Nikola Mirotic during a preseason practice.

— The Kings' seven-game losing skid is over after Zach Randolph scored each of his 18 of his points in the second half to lift Sacramento past the Thunder 94-86. Buddy Hield had 21 points as the Kings handed Oklahoma City its third loss in a row.

— Kristaps Porzingis nailed a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining and finished with 28 points as the Knicks won their third in a row, 118-113 over the Hornets. Backup Doug McDermott added a season-high 20 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. had 19 in New York's sixth victory in seven games since an 0-3 start.

— Nikola Jokic pumped in a career-high 41 points and snared 12 rebounds as the Nuggets topped the Nets 112-104. Will Barton and Paul Millsap scored 17 apiece and helped Denver hold Brooklyn's starters to 40 points.

NBA-SUNS-BUCKS TRADE

The Phoenix Suns have dealt disgruntled guard Eric Bledsoe to the Milwaukee Bucks today for big man Greg Monroe and a pair of 2018 draft picks.

The 27-year-old Bledsoe had been told by the Suns to stay away from the team immediately after his Oct. 22 Twitter post that said, "I Don't wanna be here."

Bledsoe averaged more than 20 points and six assists per game in each of the last two years with the Suns, including career highs of 21.1 points and 6.3 assists last season.

Monroe was in his third season with the Bucks after five years with the Pistons. He is averaging 14 points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting 51 percent for his career.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-CFP RANKINGS

There's no change among the top four in the second College Football Playoff rankings of the season.

Georgia still tops the rankings after improving to 9-0 last weekend. SEC rival Alabama stays at No. 2 after winning their ninth straight since last year's loss in the CFP title game.

Third-ranked Notre Dame and No. 4 Clemson continue to hold down the last two spots for the semifinal berths.

Oklahoma is fifth, followed by TCU, Miami, Wisconsin, Washington and Auburn. The Hurricanes climbed three spots with last Saturday's win over Virginia Tech.

Auburn could have a lot to say about the final playoff rankings. The Tigers take on Georgia and Alabama in two of their final three regular-season games.

NFL-BEARS-MILLER

The Chicago Bears have placed tight end Zach Miller on injured reserve as he recovers from surgery to save his left leg.

Miller tore an artery while dislocating his knee during a loss to the Saints on Oct. 29. He likely faces additional surgery to repair ligament damage in the knee.

Also in the NFL:

The Patriots have placed linebacker and defensive captain Dont'a Hightower on injured reserve due to a right shoulder injury suffered against Atlanta on Oct. 22. A person familiar with the situation said last month that Hightower would need season-ending surgery on his shoulder.

— The Giants have reinstated cornerback Janoris Jenkins from suspension. Jenkins was suspended indefinitely last week for missing a workout on Monday and not informing coach Ben McAdoo that he would be absent.

— The Texans have signed free agent quarterback Josh Johnson and released Matt McGloin. The moves come a day after coach Bill O'Brien said they had discussed the possibility of adding Colin Kaepernick in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to rookie Deshaun Watson.

— The 49ers have inked defensive back Antone Exum Jr. to a one-year contract and placed offensive lineman Garry Gilliam on injured reserve with a knee injury. Exum played 27 games for Minnesota after being drafted in the sixth round in 2014.

— Former Colts defensive star and current assistant coach Robert Mathis was charged Tuesday with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, endangering a person. Police in the Indianapolis suburb of Carmel say the 36-year-old Mathis was arrested early Oct. 24 after driving the wrong way on a one-way street and not signaling a turn.

NHL-SCHEDULE

The St. Louis Blues lead the NHL with 25 points and own a 12-3-1 record following their eighth consecutive win over the Devils.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz scored in a 1:35 span bridging the second and third periods to push the Blues past New Jersey 3-1. Brayden Schenn furnished a goal and two assists for the Blues, who shut out the Devils following Blake Coleman's goal 3:35 into the game.

The Devils have dropped three straight since a 9-2-0 start.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— Evgeni Malkin notched his team-high seventh goal and had two assists as the Penguins beat the Coyotes 3-1, spoiling head coach Rick Tocchet's return to Pittsburgh. Justin Schultz returned from a concussion and scored just 59 seconds after the opening faceoff to put the Pens ahead to stay.

The Capitals' three-game winning streak was stopped by the Sabres as Evander Kane scored twice in Buffalo's 3-1 home win. Benoit Pouliot scored the go-ahead goal on and end-to-end rush 3:22 into the third period.

— Nick Shore's goal at 3:51 of OT decided the Kings' 4-3 win over the Mighty Ducks. Dustin Brown set up the game-winner after tying the game with a power-play goal six minutes into the third period.

— The Predators also earned a 3-1 win at Columbus as Calle Jarnkrok broke a 1-1 deadlock with 5:35 left. Matt Irwin scored in the first period and Viktor Arvidsson got an empty-netter in the Predators' third straight win.

— The Oilers beat the Islanders 2-1 on Connor McDavid's goal 38 seconds into overtime. Cam Talbot stopped 36 shots and blanked the Isles after former teammate Jordan Eberle tied the game in the second period.

— Charlie Lindgren made 16 of his 29 saves in the third period to preserve the Canadiens' 3-2 verdict over the Golden Knights. Brendan Gallagher and Jordie Benn scored 2:31 apart in the first period in Montreal's sixth win in eight games since a 1-6-1 start.

— Carolina's four-game skid is over after Derek Ryan scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period of a 3-1 victory against the Panthers. Scott Darling stopped 30 shots as Carolina handed Florida its fifth straight loss.

— Bo Horvat scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period before Henrik Sedin notched his first of the season in the Canucks' 5-3 win at Calgary. Derek Dorsett's team-high seventh goal was a short-handed tally that tied the game in the second period.

NHL-DUCKS-GETZLAF

Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf will be sidelined up to two months after undergoing surgery Monday for a broken cheekbone.

He had already missed three games after being hit in the face by a puck early in a game at Carolina on Oct. 29.

Getzlaf has one goal and seven points in six games this season. He provided 73 points in 74 regular-season games last season before collecting 19 points in 17 postseason games for the five-time defending Pacific Division champs.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-CHINA-PLAYERS QUESTIONED

Police were summoned to a hotel shared by the Georgia Tech and UCLA basketball teams to investigate an unknown matter, and three players for the Yellow Jackets were questioned and cleared.

A statement from Georgia Tech on Tuesday says its players weren't involved in the activities being investigated.

UCLA team spokesman Alex Timiraos says the school is aware of the situation and is gathering more information.

The teams were staying at the Hyatt Regency Hangzhou on Tuesday before leaving for Shanghai, where Georgia Tech and No. 21 UCLA are set to open the season in a game that will be played Friday night U.S. time.

Georgia Tech says its players who were questioned were to rejoin the team and resume their scheduled activities.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL-PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA TEAM

UConn's Gabby Williams, Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier headline The Associated Press women's basketball preseason All-America team, marking the first time a school has had three players on the squad.

The trio is joined by South Carolina's A'ja Wilson, who was a unanimous choice by the 32-member national media panel Tuesday that selects the weekly poll. Kelsey Mitchell of Ohio State is the fifth member of the squad.

CONGRESS-TAXES-SPORT

The GOP tax overhaul bill released last week would eliminate federal subsidies for new stadiums. It's one of several aspects of the bill that would touch the world of sports.

Getting rid of the tax exemption has long been a popular talking point in Washington. Former president Barack Obama's 2015 budget sought to do the same thing. President Donald Trump asked in a tweet last month why the NFL was getting "massive tax breaks" amid the controversy over players protesting during the national anthem.

A Brookings Institution study found that the federal government subsidized 36 new or renovated stadiums to the tune of $3.2 billion over 16 years.

PENN STATE-ABUSE

Former Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary has ended his defamation and whistleblower lawsuit against the university.

McQueary later testified during the child sex abuse case against the school's former defensive football coach, Jerry Sandusky. He filed his lawsuit against the university in 2012 after he lost his job following the firing of former head coach Joe Paterno.

McQueary was awarded more than $12 million last year after his civil suit trial.
