NFL:

The New York Giants' exhibition season has gotten serious.

Star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. hurt his left leg during Monday night's game against Cleveland when he took a legal-but-questionable hit on the knee from Browns cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Beckham, one of the NFL's best players, caught an 18-yard pass and was coming down on his left leg when he was immediately hit by Boddy-Calhoun's right shoulder and helmet. The impact flipped Beckham onto his side and his head bounced off the turf.

Beckham popped up, ripped off his helmet and slammed it in frustration. After taking a knee as medical staff ran out to assist him, the outspoken and charismatic Beckham walked off slowly and glared menacingly at Boddy-Calhoun in Cleveland's defensive huddle.

Beckham spent a few minutes sitting alone on the bench before heading to the locker room. TV cameras captured him dropping to his knees on the floor in the corridor outside New York's locker room.

Kneeling and bowing their heads, the Cleveland Browns bonded over something bigger than football.

More than a dozen players huddled together on the team's bench Monday night to protest during the national anthem.

The group, which included veterans, rookies, starters and backups, gathered in front of some water coolers and behind their teammates who stood on the sideline shortly before the Browns hosted the New York Giants.

The protest was the largest so far in a movement started last season by quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who is currently out of the NFL. In recent days, Seattle defensive lineman Michael Bennett and Philadelphia defensive back Malcolm Jenkins also have called attention to what they feel is racial injustice in the country.

Oakland running back Marshawn Lynch also has sat during the national anthem in the preseason, but hasn't elaborated on his reasoning.

MLB:

Yasiel Puig homered in the 12th inning, propelling the Los Angeles Dodgers to victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 Monday night.

Puig drove a 1-0 pitch over the wall in center for his 22nd of the season. The Pirates threatened in the bottom half, putting runners on first and second with two out, but Ross Stripling retired Max Moroff on a liner to right for his second save.

Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam off Gerrit Cole in Los Angeles' five-run seventh, and Luis Avilan (2-1) pitched one inning for the win.

The Dodgers avoided taking a second consecutive loss for the first time since losing two straight to Atlanta on July 20 and 21. The Pirates have lost seven of their past nine games.

Since early June, the Dodgers have been the hottest team in baseball, winning 53 and losing 10. They had a 20-game lead over 2nd place Colorado entering Monday night's play and seem likely to get ace Clayton Kershaw back in the pitching rotation soon.

In other games:

— Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer and Cole Hamels pitched seven effective innings as the Texas Rangers cooled off the Los Angeles Angels with a 5-3 victory.

— Rookie Chris Stratton pitched six innings to run his scoreless streak to 12 2/3 innings his past two outings, and the San Francisco Giants stymied the contending Milwaukee Brewers with a 2-0 win. It was a night of missed chances as Milwaukee, which had won two in a row and six of seven, dropped 2 1/2 games back of the idle, NL Central-leading Cubs.

—Brandon Guyer scored when first baseman Brock Holt threw away Roberto Perez's bunt in the ninth inning, lifting the Cleveland Indians over the Boston Red Sox 5-4 in a matchup of first-place teams. After Guyer's leadoff double against Brandon Workman (0-1), Holt fielded the bunted ball and tried to throw out Guyer at third. Guyer slid into the bag as the throw skipped past third baseman Rafael Devers, then got to his feet and raced across home plate. Teammates ran onto the field and doused Perez with water and white powder.

—A.J. Pollock hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a three-game skid with a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets. J.D. Martinez had an RBI single and left fielder David Peralta threw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate for the Diamondbacks, who began the day with a 2 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee for the second NL wild card.

—Adam Jones hit a pair of home runs, Jonathan Schoop added a three-run shot and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Oakland Athletics 7-3. Wade Miley held the A's to two runs on five hits and four walks over six-plus innings to pick up his first win at Camden Yards since June 17. Miley is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA against Oakland this season.

—Andrew Albers worked into the sixth inning for his second straight win since coming up from the minors, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Albers (2-0) also had the first hit and RBI of his career — in his first big league at-bat. The 31-year-old left-hander beat his former organization, having spent most of the season at the Braves' Triple-A club. He went 12-3 but never got a call to the big leagues.

—Yolmer Sanchez homered and drove in four runs, Jose Abreu hit his 25th of the season and the Chicago White Sox held on to beat the Minnesota Twins 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader. Carlos Rodon (2-4) pitched effectively into seventh inning for the fifth straight outing to earn his first win since July 3. The left-hander allowed two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out nine. Jorge Polanco hit a three-run homer for the Twins off Derek Holland to cut it to 7-6 in the eighth.

In other MLB developments:

— The New York Mets continue to suffer from a rash of injuries to their starting pitchers. It was revealed that lefthander Steven Matz needs another elbow operation, almost certainly ending a miserable 2017 season. The team says Matz was diagnosed Monday with irritation of the ulnar nerve in his left elbow.

__Andrew Miller has been pulled from a game with an apparent injury just days after Cleveland's relief ace returned from the disabled list. Miller began the seventh inning Monday night by walking Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts on six pitches — including a number of fastballs that failed to reach 90 mph — and then threw one pitch to Andrew Benintendi before walking off the mound. Indians manager Terry Francona and a team trainer had a brief conversation with Miller, who then left the field.

—The Minnesota Twins have placed All-Star third baseman Miguel Sano on the 10-day disabled list with a stress reaction in his left shin bone. First baseman Kennys Vargas was recalled Monday from Triple-A Rochester for the fifth time this season to fill Sano's spot. The Twins also designated left-hander Nik Turley as their 26th player for the doubleheader against in Chicago and summoned right-hander Tim Melville from Rochester so he could start the first game against the White Sox.

NCAA:

A woman who reported that she'd been sexually assaulted has filed a lawsuit against Baylor University, alleging questions she faced from the university shifted blame away from her attacker toward her.

The lawsuit filed in a Waco federal court on Monday alleges that Baylor's response to the attack violated federal Title IX laws against gender discrimination. That was even though university officials said new policies had been implemented before the attack in response to a sexual violence scandal that embroiled the Baylor football program.

Jim Dunnan, a Waco lawyer representing the student, told the Waco Tribune-Herald, "I think that, unfortunately, it's an example of how things still have not changed." Dunnam and Houston lawyer Chad Dunn jointly represent 10 former students who allege that their sexual assaults weren't handled adequately.

This lawsuit alleges the student, who Dunn said still attends Baylor and was identified in the suit only as "Jane Doe 11," was attacked in April while she was a sophomore attending under two scholarships, one athletic and one need-based. The lawsuit said the student underwent a sexual assault examination by a nurse and the assault was reported to Waco and university police and Baylor's Title IX office. The person she accused told investigators that, aside from kissing, no sexual activity occurred. The lawsuit says that Baylor police investigated but filed no charges.

Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll for the second straight season and third time in five years.

The Crimson Tide, coming off a last-second loss in the national championship game that left it No. 2 to Clemson in the final Top 25 of 2016, received 52 from a panel of 61 media members.

Ohio State was No. 2, edging out No. 3 Florida State and preventing the first 1 vs 2 opening game since the AP preseason poll began in 1950. Alabama opens the season against the Seminoles in Atlanta on Sept. 2, just the fourth opener involving top-five teams and the first pitting teams ranked in the top three.

Southern California starts the season at No. 4. Defending national champion Clemson begins the post-Deshaun Watson era at No. 5.

NFL:

The NFL has signed a three-year deal to make its games available through digital streaming in China.

Tencent Sports says it has partnered with the league to air live and on-demand select preseason games and Thursday, Sunday and Monday night games.

Select Sunday afternoon and all postseason games for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons will also be made available in China, along with non-game league programming like the NFL Draft.

NFL China Managing Director Richard Young says the deal will make games available to "hundreds of millions" of daily Tencent users.

NYRA:
The 148th annual travers stakes will take place this weekend at Saratoga race course, it is a Grade 1, $1,250,000 race for 3-year-olds. All three winners of the triple crown races will be entered into the midsummer derby, as well as Kentucky derby champion Always Dreaming, and Belmont stakes winner Tapwrit.

USA GYMNASTICS:

Aly Raisman is ready to talk about "the elephant in the room." And the six-time Olympic medal-winning gymnast thinks it's time USA Gymnastics joins in a conversation she feels is long overdue. The 23-year-old is calling for sweeping change in the organization in the wake of dozens of allegations of sexual abuse by former national team doctor Larry Nassar. The scandal has left one of the U.S. Olympic movement's marquee programs scrambling and Raisman shaken.
