In the Stanley Cup playoffs, Ottawa beat Boston in overtime 4-3 to take a 2-1 series lead, Toronto topped Washington in overtime 4-3 to lead the series to 2-1, Nashville edged Chicago in overtime 3-2 to bring it to game 4 with a 3-0 series lead, and it was Anaheim over Calgary in overtime 5-4 to lead the series three games-to-none. Montreal is in New York tonight to take on the Rangers at 7:30 p.m. The Habs lead the series 2-1.
The top-seeded Washington Capitals are staring at a deficit to upstart Toronto after losing to the Maple Leafs 4-3 in overtime Monday night. It's the third straight overtime contest between the two Eastern Conference rivals. William Nylander, a former Cap, scored one of the goals for the winners, who now lead the best of seven series 2-1.
NBA:
In the NBA playoffs, Cleveland beat Indiana 117-111 to lead the series 2-0 and San Antonio won against Memphis 96-82 to gain the advantage with a 2-0 series lead. Chicago is in Boston at 8 p.m. tonight. The Celtics trail in the series 0-1.
Kansas freshman Josh Jackson has announced he will enter the NBA draft. Jackson, who released a statement on Monday, was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after averaging 16.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He helped the Jayhawks to a 31-5 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight. The 6-foot-8 Jackson has signed with former NBA player B.J. Armstrong of Wasserman Media Group.
The trial has begun for a former Boston Celtics player accused of receiving guns stolen off a freight train in Chicago. Forty-three-year-old Nate Driggers looked on yesterday as a prosecutor held up one of the guns and told jurors Driggers dealt in stolen goods. The theft of around 100 new handguns, valued at $50,000, occurred on April 12, 2015, at a South Side rail yard.
A Massachusetts man who vanished after attending a Boston Celtics game more than two weeks ago has been found dead in a river. Police say they recovered the body from the Charles River on Sunday morning. Police yesterday confirmed it was that of 23-year-old Michael Kelleher, of Southborough. Kelleher was last seen March 29th after attending a Celtics game with a friend. The cause of death remains under investigation.
Celtics coach Brad Stevens says Isaiah Thomas plans to play in Game 2 Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls, then head to Washington state to be with his family and help complete funeral arrangements for his sister. Thomas attended the team's film session and short walk-through Monday, but did not speak with the media. Stevens says that after services for Thomas' sister, the star guard intends to rejoin the team Friday for Game 3 in Chicago. The coach adds that all plans are subject to change depending on how Thomas feels. Chyna Thomas died early Saturday in a one-car accident outside Tacoma, Washington. No funeral date is set, and Stevens says the Celtics organization hopes to attend. Boston lost the opener of the seven-game series 106-102 on Monday.
Boston Marathon:
Yesterday marked Patriots' Day and the Boston Marathon. Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat — both making their Boston debuts — ran to victory in yesterday's 121st running of the race. Kirui outran Galen Rupp of the U.S. to take the men's race in an official time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 37 seconds. Rupp, also running his first Boston, trailed by 21 seconds. Kiplagat opened up a big lead heading into the dreaded Newton hills, and won in an official 2 hours, 21 minutes, 52 seconds.
Boston's top cop has completed his first marathon since the 2013 bombings. Police Commissioner William Evans returned to the storied marathon for the first time as a runner yesterday. He crossed the finish line with a time of about 3 hours and 50 minutes. Evans, who has been the city's police commissioner since 2014, said he was running to show people the race was "back to normal."
MLB:
Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Eric Thames has tied a franchise record by homering in five straight games. The former Korean baseball star hit a solo homer off Chicago Cubs right-hander John Lackey in the third inning Monday night. Thames' streak ties him with Jeromy Burnitz in August 1997 for the franchise mark. Thames has seven homers in 14 games this year and six over his past five games.
Jordan Montgomery took a shutout into the seventh inning for his first major league win, Matt Holliday homered in his return to the lineup and the New York Yankees romped to their eighth consecutive victory by beating the Chicago White Sox 7-4 last night. Holliday put the Yankees ahead with a titanic three-run shot in a five-run third inning, and Aaron Judge added a two-run homer that chased Derek Holland with the score 7-0 in the fifth.
Andrew Benintendi hit a go-ahead, two-run single as Boston scored three unearned runs following a dropped throw by second baseman Brad Miller, and the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 yesterday in the annual Patriots' Day game. Benintendi had three singles in the 11:05 a.m. start, which coincides with the Boston Marathon, and the Red Sox won their third straight after losing the opener of the four-game series.
Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will miss his scheduled start today against Toronto after Boston placed him on paternity leave. Rodriguez's wife, Catherine, gave birth to a boy on Sunday. Manager John Farrell says left-hander Brian Johnson is likely to start in place of Rodriguez.
Mets closer Jeurys Familia pitched an inning for Double-A Binghamton yesterday as he prepares to return from a 15-game suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. Familia worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning against Portland in his second appearance this season, throwing six of his nine pitches for strikes. He is eligible to return to New York's roster Thursday.
NFL:
The New York Jets have re-signed backup linebacker Julian Stanford, three days after releasing him. The team also announced yesterday that cornerback Marcus Williams has signed his restricted free agent tender, worth $2.75 million.
Andrew Luck is eager to get back to work after surgery, but he's still not still not sure when he'll be start throwing passes. Three months after undergoing shoulder surgery, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback showed up for opening day of offseason workouts Monday looking fit and trim and minus the sling he'd been wearing to protect his right arm. Luck declined to say when he'll be back on the field, but did say, "I am where the physical therapists, trainers and doctors say I am. I'm not going to worry about it." Team officials have already said they don't expect Luck to participate in much — if any — on-field drills between now and the end of June's three-day mini-camp.
A Santa Clara County judge has dismissed a rape charge against former San Francisco 49er Ray McDonald after prosecutors said the woman who made the allegation refused to testify. Judge David A. Cena dismissed the charge — one count of rape of an intoxicated person — on Monday. Santa Clara County prosecutor Chris Lamiero said in a statement he tried to convince the victim to testify, but she refused. The woman said she slipped and fell on a pool deck at McDonald's San Jose home in December 2014 and continued to fall after that because of her initial head injury and alcohol consumption. She accused McDonald of carrying her upstairs to his bedroom and sexually assaulting her. McDonald faced a maximum of eight years in prison.
