MLB:

The Miami Marlins won one for Jose Fernandez on Monday. An emotional Marlins club honored their former ace before building an early 7-0 lead in a 7-3 win over the New York Mets. The final out was recorded less than two days after Fernandez and two others were killed in a boating accident near Miami Beach. Each Miami player wore No. 16 to honor Fernandez, who was 16-8 with a 2.86 ERA and 253 strikeouts this season before dying at age 24. The pregame ceremony included a slow, solemn solo trumpet rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." Following the national anthem, New York manager Terry Collins led his Mets across the field to share hugs with the Marlins. After the game, the Marlins formed a circle around the mound and placed the ball against the pitching rubber.

Boston had a day off and extended their lead in the AL East to 6 games after Toronto dropped a game to the Yankees 7-5, Cleveland won against Detroit 7-4, the White Sox beat Tampa Bay 7-1, Seattle edged Houston 4-3 in 11 innings, and it was the Angels over Oakland 2-1. In interleague play, Milwaukee beat Texas 8-3.

In the National League, Miami bested the Mets 7-3, Cincinnati blasted St. Louis 15-2, Arizona crushed Washington 14-4, and it was the Cubs over Pittsburgh 12-2.

Vin Scully's final game in the Dodgers broadcast booth will be simulcast in its entirety on the team's cable channel and on Los Angeles TV and radio stations. Sunday's season finale in San Francisco will be aired on SportsNet LA, KTLA-TV and AM 570 radio. SportsNet LA is the team's channel and isn't widely seen in Los Angeles due to a three-year dispute with Time Warner Cable. The Giants have a tribute planned for Scully on Sunday, when they will simulcast his call of the third inning on KNBR radio and on CSN Bay Area television.

NFL:

On Monday Night Football, Atlanta topped New Orleans 45-32.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll expects quarterback Russell Wilson to play Sunday against the Jets despite a sprained MCL in his left knee. Wilson suffered the injury while being sacked early in the second half of Sunday's 37-18 rout of San Francisco. It's the second leg injury suffered by Wilson in three weeks after spraining his right ankle in the opener against Miami.

In other NFL injury news:

— Washington coach Jay Gruden says safety DeAngelo Hall will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his right knee. This marks the third straight year the veteran defensive back's season has been cut short by an injury.

— A person with knowledge of the matter says Cowboys left guard La'el Collins will be placed on injured reserve with a possible return late in the season. Collins left late in the first half of Sunday night's 31-17 win over Chicago with a toe injury.

— Pro Bowl fullback Marcel Reece has been released by the Raiders after serving a four-game suspension for violating NFL rules on performance enhancing drugs. Reece was selected to his fourth Pro Bowl last season before the suspension came down. He sat out the final game of 2015 and the first three games this season because of the suspension.

— San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis has retired once again. Davis sat out last year in part because of concerns over a concussion before deciding to return to the Niners this summer. He suffered another concussion in practice on Sept. 15 and has not played since before the team announced his retirement.

— Chargers coach Mike McCoy says linebacker Manti Te'o (MAN'-ty TAY'-oh) will miss the rest of the season with a torn left Achilles tendon. The fourth-year linebacker was hurt in Sunday's 26-22 loss at Indianapolis.

— Former Dallas defensive end Greg Hardy has been arrested on a cocaine possession charge in Texas. A jail spokesman said Hardy was booked early Monday and released on $5,000 bond in a Dallas suburb on a charge of possession of a controlled substance of less than one gram. Hardy remains unsigned after a tumultuous 2015 season revolving around his domestic violence case in North Carolina.

NHL:

In NHL preseason play, New Jersey blanked Philadelphia 2-0, the Islanders shut out Philadelphia 3-0, New Jersey edged Montreal 3-2, Columbus skated past Boston 3-2, Columbus edged Washington 2-1 in double overtime 3-2, Arizona topped Los Angeles 5-3, Ottawa doubled up Toronto 6-3, Carolina won against Washington 2-1, Minnesota won against Buffalo 2-1, Edmonton beat Calgary 2-1, Edmonton doubled up Calgary 4-2, and it was Los Angeles over Arizona 4-3.

The Boston Bruins have signed forward Brad Marchand to an eight-year, $49 million contract extension. The team announced the deal yesterday as Marchand prepares to play for Canada in the finals of the hockey World Cup.

Los Angeles Kings right wing Marian Gaborik (GAB'-uh-rihk) will be sidelined about eight weeks because of a foot injury. The 34-year-old Gaborik was hurt while playing for Team Europe in Sunday's 3-2 win over Sweden at the World Cup of hockey in Toronto. Gaborik has had three 40-goal seasons since entering the NHL in 2000, but he scored just 12 times and collected 22 points in 54 games for the Kings last season.

NBA:

Miami Heat President Pat Riley has told reporters that he believes Chris Bosh has played his last game for the team, saying the team is "not working toward his return." Bosh has seen each of his last two seasons end prematurely with blood clots that forced him to be shut down. The veteran forward recently said he felt like he could rejoin the club this season, but he reportedly failed his preseason physical last week.

Clippers forward Paul Pierce has announced through The Players Tribune that this will be his final NBA season, saying "it's time to move on from the game of basketball." The soon-to-be 39-year-old Pierce has scored over 26,000 points and won one championship during his 18-year career. The 10-time All-Star forward spent his first 15 seasons with the Boston Celtics before stops with the Nets, Wizards and the Clippers.

Cavaliers forward LeBron James says he plans to stand during the national anthem, adding that he supports the decision by some NFL players who have knelt in protest. James spoke as the defending champion Cavs get ready to open training camp. He says he is troubled by repeated videos of police shootings and that as a father of three he has concerns for their well-being.

Derrick Rose says he isn't worried about a rape trial that is to start next week because he feels he "didn't do anything wrong." Rose says he is instead focused on his first season with the New York Knicks. His first practice with the team will be Tuesday. A woman sued Rose last year in California, contending the former MVP and two of his friends raped her in August 2013 while she was incapacitated after a night of drinking. Rose and the others say they had consensual sex with her that night. The civil trial is to begin Oct. 4 — barring any settlement — the day the Knicks play their exhibition opener in Houston. The Knicks acquired Rose from Chicago in June. He says he is healthy after a series of injuries and believes he has a big year ahead.

PGA:

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III has selected Ryan Moore as his 12th and final team member and added Bubba Watson to the squad as a fifth vice-captain. Moore was chosen over Watson a day after losing the Tour Championship to Rory McIlroy in a playoff. Watson is ranked seventh in the world but failed to qualify as a player on points or persuade Love to add him as one of four captain's picks.
