Golf:

Arnold Palmer was one of the most popular figures ever in golf, generating a fervid fan base while winning seven major championships among his 62 PGA titles. Palmer has died in Pittsburgh at age 87.

Arnold Palmer Enterprises CEO Alastair Johnson confirmed that the golf legend died Sunday of complications from heart problems. Johnson added that Palmer was admitted to the hospital Thursday for some cardiovascular work and weakened over the last few days.

Palmer's good looks, mischievous demeanor and risky playing style made him a fan favorite while he helped to grow the sport on television. He came off as an "everyman," as he hitched up his pants, flicked away a cigarette and attack the flags.

Palmer's playing career included memorable moments at the U.S. Open, where he rallied from seven shots down to win and once blew a seven-stroke lead on the back nine to lose.

Tiger Woods said two years ago that golf wouldn't be as popular as it is now. "Thanks Arnold for your friendship, counsel and a lot of laughs," Woods tweeted Sunday night.

Rory McIlroy has earned the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus by rallying to win the Tour Championship in Atlanta. McIlroy trailed by three shots with three holes left in regulation before carding an eagle on 16 and a birdie on 18 to pull into a tie with Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell. He sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to take the tournament and the bonus.

MLB:

Authorities say Marlins ace pitcher Jose Fernandez and two others were killed when their 32-foot vessel slammed into a jetty off Miami Beach. A spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says none of the victims wore a life jacket, and that there was no immediate indication that alcohol or drugs were a cause in the crash. Fernandez won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 2013 and had successfully returned to form following Tommy John surgery.

The Red Sox extend their winning streak to 11 games and continue to lead the AL East by 5 ½ games over second place Toronto, Boston beat Tampa Bay 3-2 in 10 innings, Toronto topped the Yankees 4-3, the White Sox blanked Cleveland 3-0, Kansas City won against Detroit 12-9, Houston bested the Angels 4-1, Seattle beat Minnesota 4-3, and it was Oakland over Texas 7-1. In interleague play, Baltimore beat Arizona 2-1.

In the National League, the Mets shut out Philadelphia 17-0, Washington won against Pittsburgh 10-7, Cincinnati doubled up Milwaukee 4-2, the Dodgers edged Colorado 4-3 in 10 innings, San Diego beat San Francisco 4-3, and the Cubs won against St. Louis 3-1. The Atlanta at Miami game was cancelled.

It seems only fitting for Vin Scully to call a division title clincher in his final home game with the Los Angeles Dodgers. With the 88-year-old Scully behind the mike, Charlie Culberson smacked a walk-off, solo homer in the 10th inning to give the Dodgers a 4-3 victory over Colorado and their fourth consecutive National League West crown. The Dodgers took off their caps, turned toward Scully's broadcasting booth and held them in a salute to the Hall of Famer. Scully has just three games at San Francisco next weekend before ending his 67-year career.

Culberson's sixth career home run capped a late flurry of long balls. David Dahl's two-out homer off Kenley Jansen snapped a 2-all tie in the ninth, but the game continued after Corey Seager went deep with two outs in the ninth off Adam Ottavino. Seager also had tripled home a run for Los Angeles, which is the first team to capture four straight NL West titles.

New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Junior has been fined $36,000 for a crack-back block on Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro in last Sunday's game, a person with knowledge of the fine tells The Associated Press The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the NFL has not announced the fine.

The New England Patriots could be headed into Week 4 with both of their available quarterbacks injured. But coach Bill Belichick doesn't seem fazed. He deferred comment Sunday on the status of both Week 3 starter Jacoby Brissett and Jimmy Garoppolo until later in the week, as the Patriots prepare to host the Buffalo Bills next Sunday. "Well we'll give our injury report on Wednesday as we always do, as we're required to do," Belichick said during a conference call with reporters.

MLS:

Ola Kamara scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season and the Columbus Crew shut out the New England Revolution 2-0 Sunday night to keep their playoff hopes alive. Revolution forward Kei Kamara made his return to Mapfre Stadium after being traded from the Crew in May.

Europe entered the tournament as decided underdogs before going 2-1 and winning its semifinal game. The finals start Tuesday in Toronto.

NCAA:

LSU has fired head football coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron after an 18-13 loss at Auburn dropped the Tigers to 2-2. Miles was 114-34 in 12 seasons as coach of the Tigers, who were ranked fifth in this year's AP preseason poll. Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron has been promoted to interim head coach.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder after Saturday's 38-35 loss to Duke dropped the Irish to 1-3. The school tweeted a news release saying VanGorder is being replaced by defensive analyst Greg Hudson.

The top seven spots in the new Associated Press Top-25 poll are the same as last week, with Alabama leading Ohio State, Louisville, Michigan, Clemson, Houston and Stanford. From there, things are a bit different. Jumping three spots to eighth is Wisconsin, followed by Texas A&M and Washington. Alabama received 50 first-place nods, while Ohio State got four, Louisville six and Michigan one.

NASCAR:

Kevin Harvick won Sunday's race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to earn a spot in the second round of NASCAR's Sprint Cup playoffs. The 2014 Sprint Cup champion was able to zip past Matt Kenseth during the final laps in Loudon, New Hampshire.
