#SportsReport: Jimmy Walker Wins PGA Championship

PGA:

Jimmy Walker closed with a 3-under 67 to earn a one-stroke victory over defending champion Jason Day in the PGA Championship. Walker produced three big birdies on the back nine and sealed the win with a 3-foot putt for par on 18 after Day eagled the hole. Walker is the fourth first-time winner in as many grand slams this year.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Boston beat the Angels 5-3, Tampa Bay bested the Yankees 5-3, Texas won against Kansas City 5-3, Minnesota topped the White Sox 6-4, Detroit shut out Houston 11-0, Cleveland blanked Oakland 8-0, and Baltimore tripled up Toronto 6-2 in 12 innings.

In the National League, the Mets beat Colorado 6-4, Miami edged St. Louis 5-4, Atlanta slid past Philadelphia 2-1, Milwaukee doubled up Pittsburgh 4-2, San Francisco won against Washington 3-1, the Dodgers beat Arizona 14-3, and it was Cincinnati over San Diego 3-2.

In interleague play, the Cubs beat Seattle 7-6 in 12 innings.

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell has been ejected after an animated argument over a called strike in a game against the Los Angeles Angels. Farrell was tossed in the fourth inning Sunday. Farrell was fined for a previous ejection on May 9th, after returning to the field to restrain an angry David Ortiz following an ejection.

The Cleveland Indians have picked up a reliever and missed out on an All-Star catcher in advance of today’s trade deadline. The Indians have pried lefty Andrew Miller away from the New York Yankees for four minor leaguers, including highly touted outfielder Clint Frazier. Miller has been outstanding this season, going 6-1 with a 1.39 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 44 appearances. He owns a 0.772 WHIP, allowing just 28 hits and seven walks in 45 1/3 innings. But Cleveland missed out on getting Milwaukee backstop Jonathan Lucroy, who nixed a trade that would have put him on a contender. Lucroy told reporters that his decision to reject the trade was due to his family.

In other trades:

— The Yankees have reacquired reliever Tyler Clippard from the Diamondbacks for Vicente Campos in a swap of right-handed pitchers. The 31-year-old Clippard was 2-3 with one save and a 4.30 ERA in 40 relief appearances with the Diamondbacks, who signed him to a $12.25 million, two-year contract in February.

— The Orioles have picked up Wade Miley from Seattle, giving Baltimore a lefty starter as the team tries to hold off Toronto and Boston in the AL East. Miley is 7-8 with a 4.98 ERA, but he had a 3.45 ERA in five July starts. The Mariners received Triple-A lefty Ariel Miranda in the trade.

— The St. Louis Cardinals added depth to the back half of their bullpen by acquiring veteran left-hander Zach Duke from the White Sox for minor league outfielder Charlie Tilson. Duke is 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA this season and was leading the American League with 53 appearances before heading to the NL.

Kansas City has placed right-handed closer Wade Davis on the 15-day disabled list with a flexor strain. Manager Ned Yost says it's the same injury that sent Davis to the DL in early July. Davis has converted 21 of 23 save opportunities in 35 appearances this season with a 1.60 ERA.

NFL:

Despite not having a first-round draft choice as a penalty in the Tom Brady "Deflategate" case, the New England Patriots have a group of rookies already opening eyes at training camp. It starts with former Alabama Crimson Tide cornerback Cyrus Jones. "I'm not one to grade people, I'm not coach. But I can just tell, the kid's an athlete," fellow corner Logan Ryan said of Jones, the 60th pick — and New England's first — in the 2016 draft.

New York Jets running back Matt Forte continues to sit out training camp practices with what he calls a "slight" hamstring pull. One of the Jets' main free-agent signings this offseason, Forte says Sunday that he injured the hamstring running on his own before training camp started.

Odell Beckham Jr. is seemingly OK after being cleated in the area of his left ankle and being forced to leave the New York Giants training camp practice. Coach Ben McAdoo says the team's leading receiver sustained a cut on the play, ending his day at practice Sunday. The team is off Monday. It is uncertain whether Beckham will practice Tuesday, the first day the Giants wear pads. Beckham was hurt when cornerback Janoris Jenkins stepped on his foot as two landed after jumping to catch a pass downfield. Beckham got up after the play and walked to the end zone before sitting down to look at his foot. Team trainers and doctors quickly surrounded him and examined the foot. He limped to the sideline a few minutes later.

MLS:

Kevin Molino scored twice and had an assist to help Orlando City rally for a 3-1 victory over the New England Revolution Sunday night. New England had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Bradley Wright-Phillips volleyed home Connor Lade's cross in the 90th minute to give the New York Red Bulls a 2-2 tie with the Chicago Fire Sunday night. The Fire improved their home unbeaten streak to nine but remained at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table. The Red Bulls held on to second place in the East, four points behind New York City FC.

Olympics:

A Haitian-born wrestling coach from western Massachusetts will carry the flag for the Caribbean nation in the opening ceremonies for the Rio Olympics. Asnage Castelly says the Olympic Committee of Haiti chose him as flag bearer from a pool of 11 athletes representing a variety of sports. Castelly is an assistant wresting coach at Springfield Technical Community College and is Haiti's only wrestler in Rio.

Diana Taurasi scored 15 of her 20 points during a 5-minute span in the third quarter to help the U.S. women's Olympic team beat Australia 104-89 Sunday in an exhibition game at Madison Square Garden. Chicago's Elena Delle Donne added 19 points for the Americans in the final tuneup for both teams before they head to Rio.

Rajeev Ram will be heading to the Olympics for the first time, filling in for the U.S. tennis team after the Bryan brothers withdrew. The U.S. Tennis Association said Sunday that Ram will play doubles in Rio de Janeiro with Brian Baker. Ram, who was born in Colorado but is currently based in Indiana, owns nine ATP career doubles titles. He reached the semifinals at Wimbledon. Bob and Mike Bryan announced Saturday that they would be skipping the Rio Games because of health concerns. They won the gold medal in men's doubles at London in 2012, and a bronze at Beijing in 2008.

Saratoga Race Course:

At Saratoga Race Course in the Caress Stakes, No. 2 Miss Ella took the win with jockey Joel Rosario for trainer H. Graham Motion.

In the Grade 3 Shuvee H. Stakes, Curalina took the win with jockey John R. Velazquez for trainer Todd A. Pletcher.

Meanwhile a horse that raced in this year’s Kentucky Derby will make its Saratoga debut today. Tencendur was bred in Galway, New York and will race in the second race scheduled for 1:32 p.m.

LPGA:

Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn has won the Women's British Open with an even-par 72 that left her 16 under, three shots in front of Mirim Lee and American Mo Martin. It was the fourth LPGA Tour win of the year for Jutanugarn, and her first major.

NASCAR:

The NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway has been postponed until Monday because of rain. The race will start at 11 a.m., eastern time, with Martin Truex Jr. on the pole. The June Pocono race was also delayed a day by rain. NASCAR says this is the first time a track had two rain-postponed races in the same season.

IndyCar:

Pole-sitter Simon Pagenaud took the checkered flag in the IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio. He took advantage of Conor Daly's late fuel stop to win the race for his fourth victory of the season and the eighth of his career. Will Power finished second with Carlos Munoz third.

Chicken Wing 5K:

Ordering the wings hot won't be the only way to break a sweat at this year's National Buffalo Wing Festival. This year's event will feature the inaugural Chicken Wing 5K. Festival organizers say it'll give festival-goers a chance to work off some of the 25 tons of wings they're expected to consume — including some at water stations along the race course. The annual chicken wing festival takes place at Coca-Cola Stadium in Buffalo the weekend of September 3rd and 4th. The 5K takes place on Sunday.

F1:

Two-time defending F1 champ Lewis Hamilton won the German Grand Prix, the final Formula One race before the summer break. Hamilton has won six of the last seven races and now tops teammate Nico Rosberg by 19 points in the world driver standings. And pole-sitter Simon Pagenaud took the checkered flag in the IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio.
