#SportsReport: Zika & The Olympics, College World Series Goes To Game 3

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Boston beat Tampa Bayb 8-2, Texas topped the Yankees 7-1, Minnesota blanked the White Sox 4-0, and it was Houston over the Angels 7-1.

In the National League, Washington shut out the Mets 5-0, the Cubs won against Cincinnati 7-2 in 15 innings, the Dodgers edged Milwaukee 6-5, and it was Philadelphia over Arizona 4-3.

In interleague play, Detroit beat Miami 7-5, Cleveland topped Atlanta 5-3, St. Louis doubled up Kansas City 8-4, Toronto bested Colorado 14-9, Seattle defeated Pittsburgh 5-2, Baltimore won against San Diego 11-7, and it was Oakland over San Francisco 13-11.

NCAA:

The College World Series finals are going to a deciding third game following Coastal Carolina's 5-4 win over Arizona. Connor Owings broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the eighth before G.K. Young followed with a two-run single later in the inning. Mike Morrison held the Wildcats to a pair of runs and six hits while fanning a career-high 10 over 6 2/3 innings. The teams meet again Wednesday night to decide the national championship.

NCAA - Obit:

Former Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt died early Tuesday morning at age 64, five years after being diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type. Summitt helped grow college women's basketball as her Lady Vols dominated the sport in the late 1980s and 1990s, winning six titles in 12 years. She had a career record of 1,098-208 with eight NCAA championships, and 18 NCAA Final Four appearances in 38 seasons before stepping down in 2012.

NFL:

Former NFL head coach and defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan has died at age 82. The always outspoken Ryan was a linebackers coach for the 1968 New York Jets and coordinated the ground-breaking 46 defense for the '85 Chicago Bears, one of the NFL's greatest. Both of those teams won the Super Bowl, but he was 0-3 in playoff games as a head coach.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin has agreed to a four-year contract extension that runs through the 2020 season. Baldwin is coming off a career season, tying for the NFL lead in touchdown receptions and setting career highs in TDs, receptions and yards receiving.

Tennis:

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer are part of today's Wimbledon schedule after rain yesterday caused several matches to be suspended. Second seed Garbine Muguruza and No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska highlight the women's part of today's slate. Yesterday's first-round winners included women's top-seed and defending champ Serena Williams, allowing with second seed Andy Murray, fourth seed Stan Wawrinka and No. 7 Richard Gasquet.

PGA:

World No. 1 golfer Jason Day and Ireland's Shane Lowry have announced that they are not going to the Olympics because of the Zika virus. Ireland's Shane Lowry has also bowed out for the same reason. The two join a growing list of golfers who are passing up the Olympics due to Zika concerns. Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy said last week Zika will keep him from competing in Rio de Janeiro.

Former PGA Tour player Omar Uresti shot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday at Turning Stone to increase his lead to two strokes in the PGA Professional Championship. The top 20 after the final round Wednesday will earn spots next month in the PGA Championship at Baltusrol in New Jersey. The 47-year-old Uresti, a PGA Life Member from Austin, Texas, had an 11-under 205 total. He had three birdies and one bogey at Atunyote, his first dropped stroke in 40 holes. Mark Brown of Oyster Bay, New York, was second after a 69. Rich Berberian Jr. of Derry, New Hampshire, and Ryan Helminen of Menasha, Wisconsin, were tied for third at 8 under. Berberian had a 71, and Helminen shot 72.

Billy Hurley III is passing up a chance to play in the British Open next month because his sister is getting married that weekend. The 34-year-old former Naval officer earned a trip to Royal Troon by winning the Quick Loans National near Washington last weekend after entering the tournament as the world's 607th-ranked golfer. Hurley's first tournament title also qualified him for the upcoming PGA Championship and the Masters next April.

People:

Caitlyn Jenner is appearing on the cover of "Sports Illustrated" wearing her gold medal 40 years after her 1976 decathlon Olympic win. Jenner told the magazine she had a complicated relationship with the medal and had kept it in drawers and in a safe, but never on display. Jenner, at the time Bruce Jenner, was featured on the SI cover in the Aug. 9, 1976, issue after winning gold. In her new interview, she said her masculine body at the time disgusted her, but that being macho was the way she tried to convince herself that she wasn't really a woman. The special "Where are They Now" double issue featuring Jenner will hit newsstands Wednesday.

Olympics:

NBCUniversal's TV and digital networks will show a record 6,755 hours of action during this summer's Rio Olympics. The previous high was 5,535 hours from the 2012 London Games. The company said Tuesday that the main NBC network will broadcast more than 260 hours, including the opening and closing ceremonies and extensive coverage of swimming, gymnastics and track and field. Rio is just one hour ahead of the United States' Eastern time zone. The last Summer Games held in a time zone close to that of the U.S. was the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, when NBC was the only network airing events. It showed just 171 hours.

The chief organizer of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics says security is his top concern, well ahead of the Zika virus. Sidney Levy says keeping athletes and visitors safe from terrorism and other crime is his No. 1 top priority. He called the biggest fear "lone wolf" attackers. The plan is to have 85,000 security personnel on the streets. Levy said the 2013 visit of Pope Francis and the 2014 World Cup were tests for Brazil.

Legal:

Three more women have joined a federal lawsuit against Baylor University. The women are accusing the school of doing nothing to help them after they reported being sexually assaulted on or near campus. They claim sexual assaults dating from 2005 to 2014. Baylor faces three federal lawsuits alleging the school violated federal Title IX anti-gender discrimination regulations.

NHL:

The NHL has fined the Vancouver Canucks $50,000 for tampering after general manager Jim Benning discussed his interest in two players currently under contract with other teams. Benning mentioned the team's attraction to Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban and Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos during an interview before the NHL draft last week. NHL rules bar teams from discussing their interest in players who are under contract until the open window for negotiating with pending free agents.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Seattle beat Atlanta 84-81 and it was the Sparks over Dallas 89-84.
