Sports Report: Pittsburgh Penguins Halfway To Stanley Cup

Pittsburgh Penguins

NHL:

The Pittsburgh Penguins are halfway to their second Stanley Cup since 2009.

Conor Sheary scored at 2:35 of overtime to give the Penguins a 2-1 victory over San Jose and a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup finals. Phil Kessel's 10th postseason goal gave the Penguins an early 1-0 lead. But the Sharks tied it on Justin Braun's goal with 4:05 left in regulation.

Game 2s of the Stanley Cup Final have traditionally been pivotal, and lately three periods haven't been enough.

The team that has won the second game of the seven-game series has ended up hoisting the Cup nearly 74 percent of the time since 1939, when the Final expanded to the current format.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Toronto blanked the Yankees 7-0, Xander Bogaerts extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a sixth-inning single for the Boston Red Sox in their 13-9 loss to Baltimore, Kansas City doubled up Tampa Bay 6-3, Detroit won against the Angels 3-0, Cleveland edged Texas 5-4 in 11 innings, and it was Oakland over Minnesota 5-1.

In the National League, Milwaukee topped St. Louis 3-1, Washington bested Philadelphia 7-2, Atlanta slid past San Francisco 5-4 in 11 innings, Miami edged Pittsburgh 3-2, the Cubs beat the Dodgers 2-1, and it was Cincinnati over Colorado 7-2.

Cleveland outfielder Marlon Byrd has been suspended 162 games for a second violation of baseball's drug policy. Byrd tested positive for Ipamorelin, a growth hormone releasing peptide. Byrd was first suspended for 50 games in 2012.

NBA:

Game 1 of the NBA finals is tonight. The Cleveland Cavaliers take on the Golden State Warriors in their home court in Oakland.

The Boston Celtics have extended the contracts of coach Brad Stevens and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge. Stevens had three years left on the original six-year, $22 million contract he signed in 2013. Terms of the deals were not disclosed Wednesday.

NFL:

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles will be joining former Washington and Denver coach Mike Shanahan along with other NFL coaches and former players to raise money for the foundation named in honor of the late Mike Heimerdinger. The fifth annual Drive4Dinger celebrity golf tournament will be held Friday at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club with spots still available.

Defensive end Stephen Bowen has retired after playing 10 NFL seasons with Dallas, Washington and New York Jets. The 32-year-old Bowen announced his decision on Wednesday. The Cowboys signed the 6-foot-5 300-pound lineman from Wheatley Heights, New York as an undrafted free agent out of Hofstra in 2006.

Tom Brady is proving to be just as polarizing in minor league baseball as he is in the NFL. As he fights his four-game suspension for the scandal that has come to be known as "Deflategate," the New England Patriots quarterback will be the subject of special promotions in two cities next week. First, the Pawtucket Red Sox will hold a "Free Brady Night" on June 10th in which anyone named "Tom" or "Brady" will be admitted free. In response, the Buffalo Bisons are planning a "Keep Brady Suspended" night during a doubleheader the next day.

The NFL has confirmed that the Pro Bowl is leaving Honolulu for Orlando following this season. Officials say the league's all-star game will be played at Camping World Stadium, which is formerly the Citrus Bowl, for the next three years. The stadium has recently undergone a $200 million renovation. With the exception of two years, the Pro Bowl had been played in Hawaii since 1979. The stadium previously known as the Citrus Bowl recently underwent a $200 million in renovations in hopes of attracting the NFL.

In other NFL news:

— Rams quarterback Nick Foles skipped a voluntary offseason workout this week. He joined the Rams when they were based in St. Louis and agreed to a two-year, $24.5 million contract extension. He started the first nine games last season but was benched in favor of Case Keenum.

— RG3 hasn't convinced Browns coach Hue Jackson he should be No. 1 just yet. While quarterback Robert Griffin III has made steady improvement in his first practices with Cleveland, showing some of the flash that made him a star in Washington, Jackson isn't ready to name him his starter.

Olympics:

IOC leaders are set to review the final stages of preparations for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics amid concerns over the Zika outbreak, delays in completing a key sports venue and challenges posed by Brazil's political and economic crisis.

With less than two months before the Aug. 5 opening ceremony in Rio, Brazilian organizers are scheduled to deliver a report Wednesday to the International Olympic Committee executive board. Organizing committee head Carlos Nuzman will present the report to the board in Lausanne, while Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes will speak by video conference from Brazil. The IOC will also hear progress reports from organizers of the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Tennis:

Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams lead the charge into the French Open quarterfinals. Djokovic finished his rain-delayed match with No. 14 Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5. Williams rolled over Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-1, but sister Venus and fellow American Madison Keys were beaten. Men's second-seed Andy Murray and defending champ Stan Wawrinka reached the semifinals.

NCAA:

Ken Starr has resigned as Baylor University's chancellor, a week after he was removed as president amid a scandal over its treatment of sexual assault cases involving football players. Starr told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" that he didn't know about the allegations of sexual assault involving members of Baylor's vaunted football program, but that he "willingly accepted responsibility."

He says he'll continue to teach at Baylor's law school. Starr was the special prosecutor who investigated former President Bill Clinton's affair with a White House intern. He had been Baylor president since 2010.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Indiana beat Seattle 85-75 and it was Chicago over Washington 86-78.

PGA:

Donald Trump says he hopes the PGA Tour and its players "have kidnapping insurance". The comment came after the World Golf Championship announced it was moving its tournament held at Trump's golf resort at Doral to Mexico City. Tournament chairman Butch Buchholz told the Miami Herald that the tour is leaving Doral for Mexico City because it couldn't find a title sponsor for the Cadillac Championship. This is Cadillac's last year sponsoring the event.
