Sports Report: Denny Hamlin Wins Daytona 500 In Photo Finish

NASCAR:

Denny Hamlin won the Daytona 500 on Sunday by just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Martin Truex Jr., the closest finish in race history. Hamlin paced the field for 95 of 200 laps, but he was running fourth on the final lap before making a strong move to the outside, nudging teammate Matt Kenseth and then powering by Truex. It was the first victory for Toyota in the annual race, and the first for team owner Joe Gibbs since 1993.

NHL:

In the NHL Pittsburgh beat Buffalo 4-3, the Rangers topped Detroit in overtime 1-0, Minnesota bested Chicago 6-1, Anaheim won against Calgary 5-2, Tampa Bay doubled up Carolina 4-2, and it was Vancouver over Colorado 5-1.

The New York Rangers have recalled forward Marek Hrivik from Hartford and assigned forward Daniel Paille to the AHL team. New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton announced the moves Sunday before the Rangers played the Detroit Red Wings.

The Colorado Avalanche have added a veteran forward to the roster as they try to clinch a Stanley Cup playoff berth. The Avs have picked up Shawn Matthias from the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward prospect Colin Smith and a four-round pick in this year's draft. Matthias has six goals and 17 points in 51 games this season. Smith has appeared in just one NHL game since being drafted in 2012.

NBA:

IN the NBA, Boston beat Denver 121-111, Charlotte topped Brooklyn 104-96, New Orleans defeated Detroit 111-106, Cleveland won against Oklahoma City bested 115-92, San Antonio topped Phoenix 118-111, Indiana trumped Orlando 105-102, Toronto beat Mephis 98-85, Dallas won against Philadelphia 129-103, Chicago defeated the Lakers 126-115, and it was Portland over Utah 115-111.

NFL:

Former Packers offensive lineman Jerry Kramer has sold his ring from the first Super Bowl for more than $125,000. Green Bay Press-Gazette Media reports the ring was among more than 50 items from Kramer that were auctioned Saturday night. His game-used jersey from Super Bowl I sold for more than $45,000. Kramer said he's selling the items to clear his house of things he doesn't need and plans to use the money to create a college fund for his five grandchildren.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle is jailed in Kansas on suspicion of aggravated battery, drug possession and criminal damage to property. Randle has had a string of run-ins with the law, beginning with a 2014 shoplifting arrest.

NCAA:

Shane Richards scored 21 points and RaShawn Stores hit two free with 7.1 seconds left and Manhattan held off Quinnipiac 63-59 on Sunday. Rich Williams added 14 for points Manhattan. The teams were evenly matched across the board but Manhattan was 8 of 15 on 3s and made eight more free throws.

Horse Racing:

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr, trainer Rudy Rodriguez and owner Michael Dubb teamed to win the $100,000 stakes for New York breds with Court Dancer and Good Luck Gus on Sunday at Aqueduct. The winning margin in both races was a neck. Court Dancer, the 7-5 favorite, held off Willet in the Broadway for fillies and mares. It was the sixth win in 21 starts for the 5-year-old. She paid $4.90 to win. The time was 1:10.79 for six furlongs. Good Luck Gus rallied from sixth to beat 3-5 favorite Royal Posse in the Haynesfield, the fifth win in 13 starts for the 4-year-old. Royal Posse was also trained by Rodriguez and owned by Dubb. He paid $7.90 to win as the 5-2 second choice. The time was 1:43.76 for the 1 1/16 miles.

F1:

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton was the first car out on the track Monday as Formula One returned to action with preseason testing in Barcelona. Hamilton didn't waste time getting in the driver's seat to try out the new Mercedes that he will attempt to drive to a third consecutive championship this year.

Hamilton was one of the 11 drivers scheduled to test their cars on Monday, the first of four days of testing at the Circuit de Barcelona. Mercedes has dominated the last two F1 seasons, and with no major regulation changes for 2016, it is expected to be a step ahead of the other teams yet again this year. The first race of the season is March 20 in Australia.

PGA:

Bubba Watson has won the PGA's Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. He finished play 15-under-par, one shot in front of Adam Scott and Jason Jason Kokrak. Watson closed with a 3-under-68 for his ninth career win on the PGA Tour.

LPGA:

Japan's Haru Nomura fired a 7-under 65 to earn her first LPGA victory in 72 starts, taking the Australian Open by three strokes over top-ranked and defending champion Lydia Ko. Nomura was tied for the lead with two others going into the final round before finishing 16 under par. Five-time champion Karrie Webb shot 71 to finish third, seven strokes behind Nomura.

MLB:

Jeremy Guthrie will compete for a roster spot on the Texas Rangers after signing a minor league contract, 16 months after starting Game 7 of the World Series for the Royals. Guthrie was 8-8 with a 5.95 ERA in 30 games for the Royals last season before he was kept off the postseason roster.

The 36-year-old has a 91-108 record with a 4.37 ERA in 305 major league games with Cleveland, Baltimore, Colorado and Kansas City.

Also in the majors:

— The Dodgers and 24-year-old Cuban pitcher Yaisel Sierra have finalized a six-year, $30 million contract that includes a $6 million signing bonus. Sierra pitched five seasons in Cuba and went 16-21 with 25 saves and a 4.23 ERA in 131 games.
