NFL:

The Denver Broncos forced four Carolina turnovers, including a pair of fumbles by quarterback Cam Newton, and won Super Bowl 50 by beating the Panthers 24-10. In what may have been his final game, 39-year-old Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning completed 13 of 23 for 141 yards and afterward said he would "take some time to reflect" on his future.

As befits a defensive-dominated Super Bowl, the MVP of the game was Denver linebacker Von Miller. He forced two Cam Newton fumbles leading directly to two Denver touchdowns and produced two and a-half of Denver's seven sacks for the game.

Elsewhere:

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is indicating he's retiring. Lynch turns 30 in April. Lynch sent a tweet during the fourth quarter of Sunday night's Super Bowl with a pair of cleats hanging from a power line, along with an emoji depicting a peace sign. Lynch's tweet was immediately followed by statement of thanks and congratulations from teammates including Richard Sherman and Bruce Irvin. Seattle general manager John Schneider indicated in a pair of radio interviews after the Seahawks' season that Lynch was leaning toward retirement.

NBA:

In the NBA, Boston topped Sacramento 128-119, Denver bested New York 101-96, Orlando won against Atlanta 96-94, and it was the Clippers over Miami 100-93.

The NBA is reviewing whether the act of jumping on a player's back to intentionally foul him should be interpreted as a flagrant foul. Dwight Howard and Andre Drummond have both been subjected to the act. Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens says a memo from the NBA says that act will now be ruled as a flagrant 1 foul. But a league spokesman says there has not been a rule change, only that league officials are discussing how the play should be interpreted.

NHL:

In the NHL, the Islanders crushed Edmonton 8-1, Montreal won against Carolina in a shootout 2-1, and Washington edged Philadelphia 3-2.

Golf:

In golf, Hideki Matsuyama earned an unexpected victory in the Waste Management Phoenix Open on the fourth playoff hole when Rickie Fowler hit two balls into the water on the par-4 17th hole. Harris English finished third, two shots off the pace. After blowing a two-shot lead on the 317-yard hole in regulation when he blasted a driver through the green and into the water, Fowler pulled a 5-wood into the lake on the fourth hole of a playoff to set up the deciding bogey. Matsuyama two-putted for par from 6 feet to win the playoff. They each shot 4-under 67 to finish at 14-under 270.

Esteban Toledo beat Billy Andrade on the third hole of a playoff to win the Champions Tour Allianz Championship. Each finished regulation tied at 11-under and on the third extra hole Toledo got a par-4 while Andrade took a bogey-5.

NCAA:

In college men's basketball, UConn beat East Carolina 85-67 yesterday to pick up their third consecutive win and sixth in their last seven games. Shonn Miller and Rodney Purvis led five UConn players in double figures with 16 points each. Daniel Hamilton filled up the scoresheet again, scoring 12 points and grabbing 16 rebounds and dishing out five assists. Jalen Adams added 14 points for UConn.

Fairfield beat Manhattan 80-70 yesterday. Curtis Cobb scored 20 points, and Matija Milin added a career-high 19 points plus nine rebounds. Tyler Nelson scored 12 points, including the Stags' last six at the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds. Jerry Johnson Jr. made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points for Fairfield.
