Sports Report: Broncos Best Chargers 35-21

NFL football

NFL:

Peyton Manning, who broke Brett Favre's career TD passing record last Sunday night, tossed three more TDs in leading the Denver Broncos past the San Diego Chargers 35-21. All three of Manning's TD passes went to Emmanuel Sanders, who caught nine passes for 120 yards. Rookie running back Juwan Thompson added two TD runs for Denver.

Manning was 25 of 35 for 286 yards. He led the Broncos to 77 points in a span of 96 hours this week.

The Broncos improved to 6-1 while the visiting Chargers fell to 5-3. The AFC West-leading Broncos enter a stretch where four of their next five games are away from Mile High.

This Sunday, at one o’clock Buffalo will see the Jets in the Meadowlands and Chicago faces New England in Gillette Stadium. The New York Giants have a bye week.

The Atlanta Falcons are playing the Detroit Lions in London this Sunday and Falcons coach Mike Smith says he thinks the league will eventually have a franchise in London. Despite some of the logistical problems, time zone and travel issues, Smith says the league is working on making it happen and says, "it's probably going to happen sooner than later." He says "the NFL is in an expansion mode."

NHL:

Over on the ice in the NHL, the Islanders edged Boston 3-2, Detroit beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in overtime, Minnesota blanked Arizona 2-0, Nashville defeated Chicago 3-2, Vancouver topped St. Louis 4-1, Calgary shut out Carolina 5-0, Los Angeles blanked Buffalo 2-0, and it was Columbus over San Jose 5-4.

MLB:

Tonight at 8, the Royals will take on the Giants in Game 3 of the World Series in San Francisco. The Series is tied at a game apiece. Tim Hudson takes the mound for the Giants against Jeremy Guthrie of the Royals.

The Boston Red Sox have hired Chili Davis as their hitting coach. Davis held that job with the Oakland Athletics the past three seasons and with Boston's top minor-league team at Triple-A Pawtucket in 2011. In a 19-year playing career as an outfielder and designated hitter, Davis was a three-time All-Star.

NBA:

A freak back injury has put the career of 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash in limbo. The two-time NBA MVP has been ruled out for the season after suffering this latest injury a few days ago carrying his bags.

The Lakers and Nash announced their joint decision Thursday, less than a week before the start of what would have been Nash's 19th NBA season.

NCAA:

Stony Brook University has been chosen as the America East men’s basketball preseason favorite by the league’s coaches. Hartford came in at the second spot with Albany just behind at the third.
