Sports Report: David Price Agrees To $217 Million Deal With Red Sox

David Price

MLB:

A person familiar with negotiations tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that the Boston Red Sox and ace pitcher David Price have agreed to a deal worth $217 million over seven years. Price has a 3.09 ERA in eight major league seasons with 1,372 strikeouts and 104 wins. He's a serious upgrade for the Red Sox pitching staff, which struggled last season as Boston finished 78-84, last in the division.

Mark McGwire was mingling with San Diego Padres coaches at Petco Park, where the team was having organizational meetings. The club wouldn't say why. His appearance came amid speculation that he will be the Padres bench coach. McGwire has been the Dodgers hitting coach the past three seasons.

In other baseball doings:

— The Seattle Mariners and Baltimore were working to complete a trade that would send power hitter Mark Trumbo to the Orioles. The Mariners would get catcher/first baseman Steve Clevenger. The teams were reviewing medical records before finalizing the deal. Trumbo topped 30 homers in consecutive seasons for the Los Angeles Angels in 2012 and 2013.

— Dave Roberts has been introduced as the new manager of the Dodgers, saying he's eager to get to work for the team that hasn't won the World Series since 1988.

— Former Dodger great Don Newcombe collapsed at Roberts' news conference and was taken to the hospital. The 89-year old was resting comfortably at home afternoon and "doing fine," according to a Dodgers spokesman.

— The Twins have signed first baseman Byung Ho Park to a four-year, $12 million contract. Minnesota won the right to negotiate with the South Korean star by bidding $12.85 million dollars under Major League Baseball's agreement with the Korean Baseball Organization. Park hit .343 with 53 homers and 146 RBIs last season. He's a career .281 hitter with 210 homers.

—Free agent relief pitcher Joba (JAH'-buh) Chamberlain has signed a minor league contract with Cleveland. The deal includes an invitation to join the team in spring training. Chamberlain spent last season with Detroit, Toronto and Kansas City. The 30-year-old has a 25-21 career record with a 3.87 ERA and seven saves over nine seasons.

Rob Gronkowski suffered a bone bruise and sprain of his right knee during the New England Patriots' 30-24 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. The Patriots and the Gronkowski family say the tight end will be evaluated on a weekly basis, and there is no timetable for his return.

Barnes off the Jets practice squad, defensive end Lavar Edwards off the Cowboys practice squad and free-agent linebacker Kevin Reddick, who was on the Bills practice squad earlier this season.
