Sports Report: Golden State Warriors Have Longest Season-Opening Winning Streak In NBA History

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors

NBA:

In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors are the new record-holders of the longest season-opening winning streak in NBA history.

The Warriors are 16-0 after Stephen Curry scored 24 points and had nine rebounds in just over 30 minutes of a 111-77 blowout over the Los Angeles Lakers. Draymond Green also played about 30 minutes and finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Green shot 7-for-11 from the field to help the Warriors finish at 49 percent.

Atlanta defeated Boston 121-97, Memphis beat Dallas 110-96, the Clippers won against Denver 111-94, Chicago topped Portland 93-88, Golden State bested the Lakers 111-77, and it was Indiana over Washington 123-106.

NHL:

In the NHL, Ottawa beat Dallas 7-4 and Anaheim bested Calgary 5-3.

The New York Rangers are the most valuable NHL franchise at $1.2 billion, taking the top spot on the Forbes list for the first time since 2004. The magazine says Montreal is second at $1.18 billion, followed by Toronto at $1.15 billion.

The chief operating officer of the NHL is stepping down after seven years on the job. The NHL says John Collins is leaving to pursue a new business opportunity. Collins joined the league in 2006, and had been COO since 2008.

NFL:

Tomorrow on Thanksgiving Day football, Philadelphia is in Detroit at 12:30 on Fox, Carolina goes up against the Cowboys in Dallas at 4:30 on CBS, and then Chicago is in Green Bay at 8:30 on NBC.

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Steadman Bailey shot, in critical, but stable condition. The Rams said in a statement they were "aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident" late Tuesday and that they had spoken with him.

It could be last call for Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL'). The Cleveland Browns quarterback has partied himself out of a starting job, just a week after coach Mike Pettine (PEHT'-ihn) named him the No. 1 signal-caller for the rest of the season. Pettine has benched Manziel because of his off-field behavior, demoting him to third string and elevating Josh McCown to the starting job for Monday's game against Baltimore. The move comes after a video and photos turned up of Manziel partying in Texas during the bye week, after he assured the Browns he would do nothing to embarrass them.

Manziel spent 70 days during the offseason in a rehab facility specializing in treatment for alcohol and drug addiction.

Peyton Manning is expected to miss at least two more games with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot. Manning sought a second opinion from renowned foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, who recommended the five-time MVP spend at least the next week in a walking cast before beginning additional rehab.

That means Brock Osweiler will get a chance to run the offense for two more games. Osweiler threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start, a 17-15 win at Chicago last weekend.

NCAA:

In top 25 college football, No. 1 Kentucky beat Boston University 82-62.

Chris Perry slammed home a go-ahead dunk with nine seconds left to lift South Florida to its first win, a 63-61 victory over Albany on Tuesday night.

Javion Ogunyemi's layup with 2 seconds left in overtime lifted Siena over Bucknell 83-81 on Tuesday night.

Quinnipiac beat North Carolina Central 69-59 last night. Chaise Daniels had 16 points and blocked four shots, and Giovanni McLean added 13 points. Dimitri Floras added 10 points, and Daniel Harris had six points and 10 rebounds for Quinnipiac.

Binghamton picked up its first victory by keeping Central Connecticut State winless 81-75 last night. Brandon Peel had 12 points and 13 rebounds, with Khalen Cumberlander scoring 18 points and Austin Nehls 17 for the Blue Devils.

Fairfield beat Maryland Eastern Shore 113-74 last night. Marcus Gilbert made five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points, and Tyler Nelson had 20 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. Gilbert added seven rebounds, and Nelson made four of the Stags' 17 3-pointers.

Massachusetts-Lowell beat Division III Wheelock College 104-76 yesterday. Ryan Jones scored 20 points, on 8-of-12 shooting, and Jahad Thomas added 13 points with 10 rebounds. Keith Hayes II scored 15, on 5-of-5 shooting. Dontavious Smith had 14 points, and Josh Gantz 12 for the River Hawks.

Maine football coach Jack Cosgrove will step down after 23 years and become a senior associate director of athletics. The university says Joe Harasymiak will become interim coach while it conducts a national search for Cosgrove's replacement. Under Cosgrove's leadership, the team won three conference championships and made five NCAA postseason appearances.

The University at Buffalo is going with continuity by promoting Allen Greene to take over as athletic director. University President Satish Tripathi announced the decision during a news conference on Tuesday.

Greene has spent the past two years as the program's deputy director of athletics. He replaces Danny White, who was hired by Central Florida last week to become its AD. White brought Greene with him to Buffalo in 2012 after the two previously worked together at Mississippi. Greene worked for the UMAA Foundation, the fundraising arm of Ole Miss Athletics.

At Buffalo, Greene is expected to follow White's vision to raise Buffalo's national profile in taking over a Mid-American Conference program that has already undergone numerous changes. In three years, White overhauled the department's coaching staff.

MLB:

Right-hander David Carpenter has agreed to a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves after splitting last season with the Yankees and Nationals. Carpenter logged a 4.01 ERA in 30 appearances this year after spending the previous two seasons with the Braves. He is 10-5 with a 2.63 ERA and three saves in 121 appearances for Atlanta.

In other major league moves:

— The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-hander Tommy Kahnle from the Colorado Rockies for minor league pitcher Yency Almonte. The 26-year-old Kahnle was 2-2 with a 4.41 ERA in 90 relief appearances over two seasons with the Rockies.

Boxing:

A Massachusetts boxing trainer portrayed in the movie "The Fighter" by actor Christian Bale has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs. The Sun reports Dicky Eklund was held on $500 bail after pleading not guilty this week in connection with a traffic stop last Friday.

MLS:

The Red Bulls' Jesse Marsch has been voted Major League Soccer's Coach of the Year, the first to earn the honor in the two-decade history of the New York team. The Red Bulls went a league-best 18-10-6 in Marsch's first season after replacing Mike Petke, winning 14 of their last 20 games with one tie. They trail Columbus 2-0 going into Sunday's second leg of their Eastern Conference final.

Arthur Ashe:

Artifacts reflecting the public and private life of Arthur Ashe are going on the auction block. They include speech notes on AIDS awareness and the jacket he wore at an anti-apartheid protest. Those were among the causes the tennis great and humanitarian championed during his lifetime.

The 16 manuscripts and personal objects are being offered as one lot on Dec. 8 at Christie's books and manuscript sale in New York. It's expected to sell for $80,000 to $120,000. Christie's says the items are being sold by a private collector.

Ashe was the first African-American to win Wimbledon and the U.S. and Australian Opens. The Richmond, Virginia, native died in 1993 from AIDS-related pneumonia attributed to a blood transfusion following a heart operation.

FIFA:

Michel Platini's lawyer says the FIFA ethics committee has requested a life ban for the UEFA president. Platini is currently serving a 90-day ban over a $2 million payment of FIFA money he received in 2011 as backdated salary. He worked as a presidential adviser from 1998-2002 for Sepp Blatter, who also faces the ethics court's judgment in the case.

Platini denies wrongdoing and says he had a verbal contract with Blatter to receive the money. Platini faces a hearing before FIFA ethics judge Joachim Eckert next month.
