Sports Report: Warriors Push Way Back Into Contention

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors

NBA:

In the NBA finals, Golden State bested Cleveland 103-82 to even the series at 2 games apiece.

MLB:

In baseball, In the American League, Baltimore edged Boston 6-5, Oakland blanked Texas 7-0, Cleveland shut out Seattle 6-0, and it was the Angels over Tampa Bay 6-2. The Yankees had a day off.

In the National League, the Mets slid past San Francisco 5-4, Miami shut out Colorado 6-0, San Diego edged Atlanta 6-4 in 11 innings, the Cubs doubled up Cincinnati 6-3, and it was Milwaukee edged Washington 6-5.

The Washington Nationals have acquired right-handed reliever David Carpenter from the New York Yankees for minor league second baseman Tony Renda. Carpenter was designated for assignment by the Yankees last week, after going 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA in 22 games this season. Renda was a second-round draft pick in 2012.

The condition of the Massachusetts woman hit by a broken bat at Fenway Park has been upgraded from fair to good. The 44-year-old resident of Paxton, Massachusetts, suffered what police initially said were life-threatening injuries during the June 5th game between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics. The incident has prompted Major League Baseball to reevaluate fan safety at stadiums.

Dunkin' Donuts has purchased the naming rights for the new stadium being built in Hartford to house the Double-A baseball team that is moving from New Britain. City, team and company officials have announced that the stadium will be known as Dunkin' Donuts Park when it opens next April.

NFL:

The New York Giants have swapped a couple of linebackers on their roster. The Giants have signed Tony Johnson and waived Ryan Jones. Johnson played two seasons at Louisiana Tech after transferring from Southwest Mississippi Community College.

Former New York Giants running back David Wilson hopes to qualify for the U.S. track and field championships in the triple jump at his first professional meet tomorrow. Wilson was forced to retire from the NFL in August after two seasons because of a neck injury. The former first-round draft pick had been a successful triple jumper at Virginia Tech.

Leonard Williams acknowledges that he was a bit nervous when he first got to the New York Jets, knowing he'd have to learn a new playbook, new defensive system and new teammates. The sixth overall draft pick says he's over those jitters and is "ready to roll." Williams is expected to be a major contributor with the Jets as a rookie.

The Detroit Lions have signed first-round pick Laken Tomlinson to a four-year package that includes a team option and is worth about $8.3 million. The 323-pound guard from Duke was the 28th overall pick and is expected to bolster an offensive line that was a weak spot for the Lions last season. Detroit allowed 45 sacks in 2014, 22 more than the previous season.

NHL:

The Arizona Coyotes are mapping out their response to the Glendale City Council's decision to dissolve an arena lease agreement with the team.

The strategy will include a variety of legal maneuvers, but no immediate plans to relocate the team and certainly no renegotiation of the existing agreement. A lease statute allows an entity to cancel a contract if a person who worked on the deal later represents the other party, which councilmembers say happened when former city attorney Craig Tindall began working for the Coyotes as general counsel in 2013.

WWE:

WWE says Virgil Runnels, a former professional wrestler known by his fans as Dusty Rhodes, has died. He was 69. The company says Runnels died yesterday, but a spokesman declined to say where or how he passed away, saying the family had not authorized the release of that information.

Golf:

Bernhard Langer shot four birdies on the final five holes to tie a course record with a 6-under-par 65 in the first round of the Senior Players Championship yesterday. The tournament's 2014 winner bogeyed twice, but also had four birdies on the front nine. Guy Boros, Lee Janzen and Rocco Mediate finished the round in a three-way tie for second at 4-under-par 67.

Olympics:

Boston 2024 is hoping to turn around its struggling Olympic bid. Organizers are now focusing more on communities that need the jobs and redevelopment they say the Olympics can bring. The sailing venue has been relocated from Boston Harbor to the working class former whaling capital of New Bedford. Tennis has moved from Harvard to the inner city.
