Sports Report: Keen Ice Tops American Pharoah At Travers

Patrick Garrett/WAMC

Horse Racing:

The "Graveyard of Favorites," also known as Saratoga Race Course, claimed another one Saturday. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah had his eight-race win streak end when Keen Ice captured the Travers Stakes by three-quarters of a length.

American Pharoah dueled with Frosted from the gate to the top of the stretch before being caught by late-running Keen Ice and finishing three-quarters of a length behind.

Baffert says he would like to train American Pharoah up to the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 31 at Keeneland. It would be the colt's final start before retiring to stud.

MLB:

In baseball, in interleague play, the NL East leading Mets edged Boston 5-4 to avoid a sweep and keep their 5 ½ game lead over the Nationals, the Yankees crushed Atlanta 20-6 to complete a three-game sweep which puts them 1 ½ games back in the AL behind the Blue Jays, and it was Oakland over Arizona 7-4 in 11 innings.

In the American League, Toronto beat Detroit 9-2, Tampa Bay edged Kansas City 3-2, Cleveland bested the Angels 9-2, Minnesota won against Houston 7-5, the White Sox defeated Seattle 6-5 in 11 innings, and it was Texas over Baltimore 6-0.

In the National League, Colorado blanked Pittsburgh 5-0, Washington beat Miami 7-4, San Diego topped Philadelphia 9-4, Milwaukee bested Cincinnati 4-1, the Cubs shut out the Dodgers 2-0, and it was St. Louis over San Francisco 7-5.

Jake Arrieta tossed the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season and the Chicago Cubs ended a four-game slide by beating the L.A. Dodgers 2-0 as he improved to 17-6. Arrieta struck out a season-high 12, including all three Dodgers in the ninth inning. Kris Bryant's first inning home run produced all the scoring.

The American flag was flying at half-staff yesterday at Turner Field in Atlanta, a day after a fan was killed in a fall from the upper deck. The Atlanta Braves say Gregory Murrey was a longtime season-ticket holder and "an incredibly passionate Braves fan," and the team is "deeply saddened" by his death. No one else was hurt when Murrey fell into the lower-level stands during a game between the Braves and the New York Yankees.

The National League East-leading New York Mets have bolstered their bullpen, getting right-handed reliever Addison Reed from the Arizona Diamondbacks for two minor league pitchers. The 26-year-old Reed was 2-2 with a 4.20 ERA in 38 games for Arizona this year.

Meanwhile the Red Sox are heading back home to host the rival New York Yankees for the three-game series at Fenway Park.

NFL:

In NFL preseason play, Houston topped New Orleans 27-13, Arizona bested Oakland 30-23.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell are expected in court after failing to settle the "Deflategate" scandal.

Both sides are to appear before a federal court judge in Manhattan Monday for a status conference.

The dispute centers on the legality of the NFL's four-game suspension of Brady after Goodell concluded he conspired with Patriots ball handlers to deflate footballs at January's AFC championship game victory.

The NFL Players Association has asked the judge to void the suspension.

Federal Judge Richard Berman has urged both sides to agree to a deal. He warned the NFL earlier this month he can erase Brady's suspension if it fails to negotiate a deal.

Berman has said he hopes to decide the case by Sept. 4 if there's no settlement.

The New York Jets have released 12 players, including five wide receivers, reducing their roster to 78 a day after defeating the Giants 28-18. The Jets must cut three more players by 4 p.m. tomorrow to get down to the mandatory 75-player limit. All teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by Saturday.

New York Jets rookie defensive lineman Leonard Williams, the team's first-round draft pick, has a muscle strain behind one of his knees. Williams was injured in the first half of the Jets' 28-18 preseason victory over the Giants Saturday night. The injury isn't expected to be a long-term situation.

Tennis:

Maria Sharapova is pulling out of the U.S. Open for the second time in three years. She withdrew yesterday because of a lingering right leg injury. Play begins today. The U.S. Tennis Association announced the withdrawal via a press release at about the same time that Sharapova posted the news on her Facebook page.

MLS:

Bradley Wright-Phillips had two goals and an assist to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 3-0 victory over D.C. United last night. The Red Bulls moved two points behind Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United. Lloyd Sam opened the scoring in the 33rd minute.

IndyCar:

Scott Dixon captured a fourth IndyCar championship by winning the season finale to snatch away the title from Juan Pablo Montoya, the Colombian sensation. The pair finished tied in points but Dixon was awarded the title based on wins. Sonoma Raceway was his third victory, while Montoya had only two.

WNBA:

In the WNBA playoffs, Tulsa beat Indiana 76-70, Connecticut won against Chicago 72-68, Minnesota bested Phoenix 71-61, Los Angeles topped San Antonio 60-52, and it was Seattle over Washington 69-59.

Little League:

The international team from Japan has won the Little League World Championship. In the title game Tokyo defeated Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, 18-11.

Tokyo won the Little League World Series by pounding out 22 hits and overcoming an eight-run first-inning deficit.

The Kitasuna Little League team, also the winner in 2001 and 2012, gave Japan its 10th title.

The international team has won five of the last six Little League World Championships.

Sign-waving, cheering fans lined the streets to welcome home Lewisberry's Red Land Little League team, which made it to the finals of the 2015 Little League World Series championship.

Although the team lost 18-11 to Japan on Sunday, family members' and friends' pride and the thrill of being in the competition won out over their disappointment.

Chelsea Covington of New Cumberland is a 2011 graduate of Red Land High School. She tells The Patriot-News in Harrisburg that Red Land's achievement is "the biggest thing that has happened" in the little town. "It's crazy."

PGA:

PGA Championship winner Jason Day has continued his winning ways. The Australian finished first in the first of the FedEX playoff tournaments, The Barclays. Day shot a final round 8-under-62 to finish 19-under-par and six shots in front of Henrik Stenson.

The field will be cut to 70 for the BMW Championship in Lake Forest, Illinois, and to 30 for the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

The winner of the FedEx championship gets a $10 million annuity.
