MLB:

In an all interleague day in baseball, the Yankees bested Miami 9-4, Boston topped Atlanta 5-2, Toronto trumped the Mets 7-1, Pittsburgh edged the White Sox 3-2, Philadelphia slid past Baltimore 2-1, Minnesota won against St. Louis 2-1, Houston doubled up Colorado 8-4, San Diego beat Oakland 3-1, the Angels defeated Arizona 7-1, Tampa Bay bested Washington 5-3, Cleveland edged the Cubs 4-3, Kansas City slid past Milwaukee 3-2, San Francisco blanked Seattle 7-0, and it was the Dodgers over Texas 1-0.

The Detroit at Cincinnati game was postponed due to rain.

Alex Rodriguez reached 2,999 hits with a pair of singles as the New York Yankees beat the Miami Marlins 9-4 last night. Rodriguez hit an RBI single in the first inning and hit a sharp grounder past diving third baseman Donovan Solano in the fifth to move within one hit of becoming the 29th player to reach the 3,000 plateau. Carlos Beltran and Brett Gardner each had two-run homers for the Yankees.

Red Sox manager John Farrell benched Pablo Sandoval for last night's game against Atlanta after the third baseman used his Instagram account during a loss to the Braves. Sandoval says he had returned to the clubhouse to use the bathroom during Wednesday night's 5-2 defeat and checked his phone. Sandoval says he has apologized to Farrell and general manager Ben Cherington, who is with the team.

NFL:

The New York Giants' top draft pick this year has signed a multiyear contract with the team. Tackle Ereck Flowers negotiated the deal himself. It will be worth around $13 million over four years, based on what last year's Number 9 overall selection, Minnesota linebacker Anthony Barr, received from the Vikings.

A properly inflated ball from the game in which Tom Brady used underinflated footballs is up for auction. Bidding starts at $25,000 in the auction running through July 17th. An NFL-commissioned report found that during a halftime examination, 11 of the 12 balls used by the New England Patriots offense were under the league-mandated minimum of 12.5 pounds per square inch. The balls were re-inflated for the second half against the Indianapolis Colts.

Legendary receiver Andre Reed is once again looking to make his mark with the Buffalo Bills. The Hall of Fame wide receiver joined his former team this week as a coaching intern. As part of the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship, Reed is one of seven coaches who will work with the team through training camp.

A judge has ruled that New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson remains competent to run his business empire. The ruling upholds Benson's decision nearly six months ago to place his third wife, Gayle, first in line to inherit control of his NFL and NBA teams. She replaced Benson's recently disowned heirs who had been groomed to take over. Benson's daughter, Renee Benson, sued in January, asking Reese to rule that their patriarch was mentally unsound and being unduly manipulated by his wife when he changed his succession plan.

Former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow has died. He was 79. The bruising running back won the Heisman in 1957, making him the first member of the Aggies to claim the honor. Crow was the second pick in the 1958 NFL draft and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection in a professional career with the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.

Olympics:

Boston's TD Garden has been named as the preferred venue for Olympic and Paralympic basketball finals and Olympic gymnastics and trampoline if Boston is named the host city for the 2024 Summer Games. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Boston 2024 Partnership Chairman Steve Pagliuca made the announcement yesterday inside the 19,600-seat arena, home of the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. Pagliuca is an owner of the Celtics.

NHL:

Tens of thousands of fans lined the parade route and filled Soldier Field to celebrate the team's Stanley Cup win over Tampa Bay. Team members rode in double-decker buses, waving to fans along the way. Once at the Chicago Bears' stadium, Blackhawks star Patrick Kane introduced team captain Jonathan Toews, who walked on stage holding the Stanley Cup high. He kissed the trophy as fireworks went off in the background. Chicago has won the Stanley Cup three of the last six seasons.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed goaltender Joe Cannata. The 25-year-old Wakefield, Massachusetts native posted a record of 3-2-0, a goals-against average of 1.99, and a save percentage of .932 in five games with the American Hockey League's Utica Comets last season.

Golf:

Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson share the first-round lead at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, while Tiger Woods finds himself 15 shots back following his worst round in tournament history. Stenson and Johnson each shot a 5-under 65 that puts them one stroke ahead of Patrick Reed and two in front of Matt Kuchar, Ben Martin and amateur Brian Campbell. Masters champ Jordan Spieth (speeth) shot a 68, Phil Mickelson carded a 69, world No. 1 Rory McIlroy signed off on a 72 and Woods had eight bogeys and a triple-bogey in a 10-over 80.

A 6-year-old Foxborough, Massachusetts boy has raised $25,000 for cancer research by playing 100 holes of golf in one day in memory of a classmate who died of the disease. The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro reports Ryan McGuire completed the golf marathon Wednesday at MGA Links at Mamantapett, a par-3 course in Norton.

NCAA:

TCU has won a College World Series elimination game to earn the right to take on the defending champions on Friday night. Trey Teakell tossed perfect ball over 4 1/3 innings and Dane Steinhagen had three RBIs as the Horned Frogs knocked off LSU 8-4 in Omaha. TCU broke a 3-all tie in the fifth as Evan Skoug doubled in the go-ahead run and Steinhagen singled in two more. The Horned Frogs will have to win two straight against Vanderbilt to move into next week's best-of-three finals.
