NBA:

In the NBA, Boston topped Phoenix 115-110, Brooklyn won against Denver 110-82, Miami bested Philadelphia 119-108, Chicago beat Milwaukee 87-71, Houston defeated Minnesota 113-102, New Orleans edged Toronto 100-97, Utah beat San Antonio 90-81, and it was Memphis over the Clippers 90-87.

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that the Brooklyn Nets plan to sign Thomas Robinson once he clears waivers. Robinson was waived on Sunday by the Denver Nuggets, who had acquired him from Portland on Thursday at the trade deadline.

NHL:

Over on the ice, New Jersey blanked Arizona 3-0, and it was Anaheim over Detroit in a shootout 4-3.

MLB:

Alex Rodriguez has reported to the New York Yankees ahead of schedule. He spoke to reporters for about 8 ½ minutes yesterday outside the Yankees minor league complex about his season-long drug suspension. He said, "I cringe when I look at some of things I did." He never said why he resumed the use of performance-enhancing drugs, never explained what he did and avoided getting into any specifics.

A group of investors headlined by Red Sox president Larry Lucchino has announced that it's purchased the Pawtucket Red Sox and will relocate the team to Providence. The new owners say they decided to move the team to Providence because making improvements to 73-year-old McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket would be expensive.

19-year-old infielder Yoan Moncada has agreed to a $31.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox yesterday.

NCAA:

In top 25 women’s college basketball, No. 1 UConn blasted Tulane 94-47. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had 21 points and Breanna Stewart added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Morgan Tuck had 16 points and eight rebounds and Moriah Jefferson added 15 points for the Huskies.

Golf:

A cable and Internet-based network devoted to golfing that opened in Hartford with state assistance nearly two years ago has suspended operations. Without elaborating yesterday, the Back9Network cited a "temporary shortfall in capital." The network says it's planning its next steps and will continue to seek long-term operating capital.

NFL:

Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams said the team plans to release him after nine seasons. He told Charlotte television station WBTV Monday that he was informed of the decision in a meeting last week with general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Ron Rivera.

Williams is the franchise's all-time leading rusher with 6,846 yards, but his production dropped off this past season due in part to injuries that forced him to miss 10 games.

Formula 1:

McLaren says Fernando Alonso is making a "solid recovery" after being concussed following a crash in Formula One testing and is staying in the hospital for further observation. The Spanish driver was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital for precautionary checks after his McLaren collided with a wall at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit on Sunday.

FIFA:

A FIFA task force has recommended playing the 2022 World Cup in November-December to avoid the summer heat in Qatar.

FIFA says the task force chose the option over other proposals to play in January or May. FIFA also says the tournament should be shorter than the current 32-day schedule.

The plan must be approved by the FIFA executive committee, chaired by President Sepp Blatter, at a March 19-20 meeting in Zurich.

Blatter has long favored November-December to avoid clashing with the Winter Olympics, scheduled for February 2022.

European clubs and leagues oppose FIFA's proposal, which shuts them down for several weeks in midseason.

FIFA chose Qatar as host in December 2010, when the gas-rich emirate had bid to host the tournament in the traditional June-July slot.
