Sports Report: NY Rangers Blank Penguins 5-0

In the NHL, the Rangers shut out Pittsburgh 5-0, the Islanders blanked Colorado 6-0, New Jersey beat Minnesota 3-1, Montreal won against Winnipeg 3-0, Washington doubled up Columbus 4-2, Florida bested San Jose 4-1, Chicago topped Tampa Bay in a shootout 3-2, Nashville beat Edmonton 3-2, Dallas defeated Arizona 4-3, Vancouver skated by Ottawa in a shootout 4-3, and it was St. Louis over Buffalo 6-1.

NBA:

To the NBA where Toronto topped Orlando 104-100, Memphis beat the Lakers 107-102, Milwaukee defeated Oklahoma City 85-78, Dallas bested Sacramento 106-96, Portland trumped Charlotte 102-100, and it was San Antonio over Golden State 113-100.

MLB:

Baltimore's Buck Showalter has been voted AL Manager of the Year for the third time. Showalter received 25 of 30 first-place votes and 132 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Showalter guided the Orioles to a 96-66 record and their first AL East title since 1997.

Meanwhile Matt Williams has been chosen NL Manager of the Year after guiding the Washington Nationals to the league-best 96 wins in his first season on the job. Williams got 18 first-place votes and 109 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

ESPN is reporting that the Boston Red Sox are looking to sign third baseman Pablo Sandoval despite the San Francisco Giants’ opting for a re-sign.

NFL:

A sports memorabilia dealer who sued the New York Giants and quarterback Eli Manning for allegedly doctoring equipment to make it appear game-worn has scored a legal victory. A federal judge in Newark ruled yesterday that Eric Inselberg can proceed with his lawsuit in state court. The Giants had sought to have the case moved to federal court, claiming part of Inselberg's lawsuit involves federal patent issues.

NCAAF:

Oregon has jumped over undefeated Florida State and into second in the College Football Playoff rankings, while TCU took over the fourth spot. Unbeaten Mississippi State remains No. 1. The Seminoles slipped to No. 3, and Oregon moved up after trouncing Utah in Salt Lake City. Alabama is No. 5 and Arizona State is sixth.

NCAA:

The two-time defending-champion Connecticut Huskies are the No. 1 team in The Associated Press women's basketball preseason poll after receiving all 35 first-place votes. South Carolina is second, followed by 2014 finalist Notre Dame, eight-time champion Tennessee and Texas A&M. Stanford, Duke, Baylor, Texas and Maryland round out the top 10.
