Sports Report: NHL Regular Season Starts; NFL Owners Meeting Approve Bills Sale

NFL:

NFL owners spent five hours discussing the league's personal conduct policy, domestic violence and discipline for misbehavior during their fall meetings Wednesday. Owners listened to a presentation on domestic violence after unanimously approving the sale of the Buffalo Bills to Terry and Kim Pegula. After the meeting, commissioner Roger Goodell said it's up to a neutral arbiter to decide whether he should testify during an appeal of Ray Rice's indefinite suspension.

Tight end Tim Wright is growing more comfortable with the New England Patriots after he was traded from Tampa Bay less than two weeks before the season. Quarterback Tom Brady hit Wright for a 17-yard touchdown that gave the Patriots a 14-0 lead in their 43-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday night.

A Texas judge has tentatively set a Dec. 1 trial date for Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson on a charge of felony child abuse for using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son earlier this year. Peterson is on paid leave and the Vikings' final game of the regular season is Dec. 28.

There's no guarantee the trial will begin Dec. 1, either. Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon indicated he intends to file a motion to remove Judge Kelly Case after Ligon pointed out that Case had called attorneys in the case "media whores." Case apologized, but a Nov. 4 hearing was scheduled on whether to assign a new judge.

On Thursday Night Football, Indianapolis will be in Houston tonight to faces the Texans at 8:25.

NHL:

The Los Angeles Kings raised their second Stanley Cup banner in three years on Wednesday before opening their NHL season with a 4-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks. Tommy Wingels scored twice and Patrick Marleau added a power-play goal and an assist to support Antti Niemi's 28th career shutout. Jonathan Quick stopped 26 shots for the Kings.

The Boston Bruins won their season opener as Chris Kelly beat Steve Mason with 1:51 remaining to give the B's a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia. Tomas Plekanec scored twice, including the game-winner with 43 seconds left in Montreal's 4-3 triumph in Toronto. Radim Vrbata provided the winning goal in Vancouver's 4-2 verdict over Calgary.

MLB:

Authorities are investigating a burglary at a museum honoring Yogi Berra.

Montclair State University Police Chief Paul Cell says the break-in at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center happened Wednesday morning. He would not say what, if anything, was taken.

The museum honoring the New York Yankees Hall of Famer opened in the late 1990s. It is located on the university's campus in the northern New Jersey community of Little Falls. In addition to the baseball exhibits and memorabilia, it offers children's educational programs that focus on sportsmanship and social justice.

County, state and federal agencies are assisting in the investigation.

The Essex County Crimestoppers program is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the burglary.

Horse Racing:

Cigar, the two-time Horse of the Year has died. The 24-year-old horse had a 16-race winning streak, a top feat in racing history. The horse retired in 1999.

NBA:

The Boston Celtics beat the New York Knicks 106-86 in a preseason game last night. Jared Sullinger scored 23 points for the Celtics. Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Knicks with 18 points in new coach Derek Fisher's debut. Carmelo Anthony added 10 points on 3-for-9 shooting.

WNBA:

The WNBA remains the leader among professional sports leagues for racial and gender hiring practices. According to an annual report released yesterday by The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, the league received A-plus grades in race and gender hiring. It marks the 10th consecutive year the WNBA has received at least A grades in each category.
