Major League Baseball is expanding its video review process next season. Managers will be allowed one challenge over the first six innings of games and two after the seventh inning until the end of the game. Calls that are challenged will be reviewed by a crew in MLB headquarters in New York City, which will make the final ruling. The proposal is to be voted on by the owners in November.
Checking the scoreboard, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Red Sox 2-1 yesterday. The AL East-leading Red Sox lost two of three in Toronto and open a three-game series at home against the Yankees tonight.
Elsewhere in the American League, Chris Nelson hit his first two home runs of the season. That included a grand slam helping the Angels beat the Yankees 8-4 to prevent a four-game sweep. Oakland blanked Houston 5-0. It was Detroit over Kansas City 4-1. Tampa Bay topped Seattle 7-1 and Minnesota trumped the White Sox 4-3.
In the National League, the Mets beat San Diego 4-1. St. Louis edged ahead of Pittsburgh 6-5 in 12 innings. San Francisco bested Washington 4-3 and Cincinnati edged Milwaukee 2-1.
Checking NFL preseason action, Baltimore defeated Atlanta 27-23. Philadelphia won against Carolina 14-9. Cleveland crushed Detroit 24-6 and Chicago passed San Diego 33-28.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was back at practice wearing a knee brace one day after hurting his knee. Brady sprained his left knee about midway through Wednesday's practice.
Finally at Saratoga Race Course, Hangover Kid won the West Point Stakes for trainer Jason Servis under jockey Irad Ortiz, paying $13.80 to win.
Saturday is the Grade 1 $600,000 Alabama Stakes.
